You can quit alcohol straight if you don't get like horrible withdrawals. It's toxic as fuck to consume everyday so the sooner you quit that shit the better you feel.

What is the best approach for someone who is trying to quit a drug?
To abandon the powerless mythology we've all been taught and fully realize you are in total control of your behavior and always make decisions regarding intoxication. Also, in order to change your behavior, you must understand clearly what benefits you see that intoxication provides for you. If you can't or won't identify the benefits you've attributed to intoxication, then change will be difficult or impossible.

Cold turkey. Looking back at my addictions there is no way I would have been able to be disaplined enough to taper off of a substance. Tapering sounds good in theory but I was all or nothing. With certain substances (alcohol and benzos especially) or if the dependence is severe enough it might be wise to seek medical attention.

Cold Turkey unless your on something where the withdrawl symptoms could be physically dangerous.
I've never completely agreed with a RJ Tubbs post before but I'm on board with that one. Using substances can obviously cause negative outcomes, but you also must examine them as symptoms. Also agree with with you are in total control. Friends or counselors can give you insights, but only you control your behavior.

thread revival!
im at the end of my 3rd day of not drinking. really trying to quit this time. i went 2 whole days not drinking. i know withdrawals are real and dangerous. i have a small flask of whiskey that i had sipped twice before bed last night as i was feeling a lot of anxiety and dont want to get WD. i wasnt craving alcohol today but still feel a bit funny from abstaining. i havent really felt any WD symptoms today until now (and its mild) so i think ill have a sip or two to try and calm it, but thats all. my blood pressure is getting dangerously high and i need to stop binge drinking. 3 good days so far..

Hey good job man! Alcohol can be tough. I came off the needle and still couldn't put down the booze. I know how hard it can be. If you ever need anyone to talk to shoot me a PM. Keep it up brotha. It gets better the longer you go without, trust me π

Ya man just ease off er steady if ya can. Cold turkey depending how much you been drinking can send you to the hospital. I've lost count of how many times I was coming off the half gallon diet trying to Cold turkey it and siezing out in a bush just to later wake up in detox or the hospital. I found the best thing to do once you can get the shots down is to switch to a couple 5% beers for a day just to keep yourself from having serious medical problems. It ain't gonna be comfortable but I mean idk just distract yourself or sleep if you can. If you can manage 3 5% beers in a couple days then you'll be safe to quit without medical worry and it'll just be mental at that point.
Once again this varies person to person and severity of dependancy
I can tell you straight up I used to go through a half gallon of vodka a day for years while I was still homeless and it was hard coming off that.
I was able to with the light beers then just stopped.
Man if I can do it I know you can too.

i was drinking about .5L of whiskey a day on work nights, then much more on weekends. ive been able to taper a good deal the last 2 weeks or so where i would have 3-4 beers a night, usually 7%-8% beers. i think ive done well to lower intake overall and its giving me hope that i can get through the next week with drinking as little as possible. i did have a sip of whiskey about 30 minutes ago because i was feeling a bit shakey but i feel better now.

Hey you are doing good man as long as you are gradually tapering off don't sweat it man. You'll be able to stop here soon enough. Try and switch to the 5%'s. I know it sucks but it will nip it in the butt fast I promise. I tried to do the 8%'s but it just takes forever and eventually just leads back to taking shots.
Take your time however you see fit though. Don't stress yourself out too much. You are doing good π
