@Rara - what kind of distillate are we talking? CO2 extracts would be the best for starting material but those are extremely expensive... ive looked at getting a Roto-Vap for doing fractional distillation but they were out of my price range at the time... 5-7k for a refurbished unit... 10+ for a new one.

When I win the lottery, I plan on buying 2. Also a nice pharmaceutical freeze dryer... ya know, for science.

You don't need a roto evaporator from what I've heard, a traditional short vigerix column and vacuum is enough for small hobby Operations.

I'm planning on doing both EtOH and Butane hash oil as my starters.

I build a vacuum pump out of a 115psi water pump and a vacuum aspirator but I'm getting the drift now that it's the equivalent of doing pitri transfers on the oven door with the elements on in the myco world. (it's cool to show physics students the venchuri affect but just isn't practical for lab use)

Yeah... ive always just bought my vac pumps... I can be pretty resourceful when I need to be but im also lazy af... lol...

Personally, id rather have too much expensive equipment and overkill my needs than to try and get a bargain just to fuck up all your material...

It pulls -10 inches of Hg with out ice water. I'm just struggling to make a system that is quieter and doesn't fill my water traps. Mother fucker fills a quart sized trap in 30min of use.

I wish we could visit each other one day. The stuff we could talk about being fabricators and making cool lab stuff for hours on end lol.

Well I had to try cleaning up this aspirator before throwing it away, the nozzle jet holes didn't line up and the surface finish on the cone profile receiving the water jet like it was the 10,000th part before the boring insert was changed.

So I left it together and kinda swept it straight than drilled the hole 20 thou bigger and it actually line up now, also skimmed that thought surface so that water can actually flow, not get back washed.

Just hooked it up to my thumb with a couple blocks of ice and just pulled 13 inches of Hg! Gunna see how thi

Okay welders, how do you convince a shop owner to buy a ventilation system? We are adding a fabrication wing to our building and it's going to be open with the rest of the manufacturing wing. There's going to be 3-4 welders welding mainly stainless TIG and stainless stick welding. I'm threatening right now to leave because,

when I was deciding welding or machining, in my welding classes they explained how not good fume ventilation will lead to a list of health problems, than my first welding shop I worked at I had to weld the inside of these steal tanks with no ventilation or fumeless welding hood.  So I became a machinist.

Every welder I've talked to over the age of 50 can't hold their hand out to shake with out their hand wobbling.

PS I also live in a super undeveloped state, we have no employee protection.  Legit my state requires no work comp insurance for employers or any safe working condition requirements.

MT, I've looked into mass vac systems that are for a whole room. It's one of those systems that just anciently sucks air from the center of room. You guys think it will be enough to at least keep the fumes out of my side of the facility?

Well anything that creates a lower pressure in the welding area vs the rest will keep most things there.

I'll take your guy's word on it. I always imagined those portable vacuumed arm hood style vapor collection systems being the best (if used correctly) since it's sucking the fumes right at the source. What do other fab shops usually use? (or maybe rather the lack of, what needs to be used)

I melt a lot of glass and would not do so without a good fume hood/vent. Fuck that.

Tig isn't too bad but stick will definitely need ventilation... those sniffer units youre talking about would be your best option... probably also cheaper than Wall mounted unit...
