My cult pic of the day is of a failure. I think this might be my first ever trich infected box. I don't seem to have much of an issue with trich. I've had other unknown things ruining some of my boxes or trays here and there but not really trich.
This boxb is APE and I'm not sure if APE is more prone to contams than regular cubes but I have more issues with it. My coir is always pasteurized so it HAS to be dirty spawn, even though the jars looked great to me. I do note that my APE jars seem to have denser/whiter mycelium than regular cubes. It's not like those bacterial jars that look as dense and solid as marshmallow paste, but more in that direction than regular cubes. I have always assumed this is just how APE is. Anyone know? I should mention I've grown APE boxes that turned out ok.
Here is what I feel is a pretty good APE jar. Maybe not perfect but good:

Don't jinx yourself hindsight or you'll end up like me.
Hey A.K.A., about the coir...today I found one of my shoeboxes had begun to knot and also a spot of mold on some uncolonized coir:
I don't want to point my finger at the coir really since it just doesn't make sense to me that it's the main thing holding me back, but I did sterilize some today and am running a set of bottles against some I made 2 days ago with my regular prep.

What is the point of sterilizing coir that u then just spawn in the open air? Im genuinely curious. Ive never pc'd coir but i know some of yall do can someone explain? Someone said they dust the rat shit off their coir then use it in this post a bit back right? lmfao
Id understand PCing substrate in a tek like the bottle tek where u spawn in sterile conditions. But if your pcing coir then taking it out of the pc and throwing it in a tub in the open air innit that just a waste of time?
Edit: Ah i see you mentioned bottles. Makes sense. Hope u meant pasteurized and not sterilized.

Coir doesn't have enough ,or any maybe, nutrients to contaminate after sterilization, some core with exceptions maybe, it's inert. And people think, mostly because of pasty I believe, myc enjoys cooked coir more than un.
I'm starting to think that if your core is super dirty tho it could even ruin good spawn.
And idk if a couple rat turds on the outside of a brick could compare to manufacturing and handling conditions, even harvest conditions of the coir itself.
Would be cool if you knew there wasn't trich added to your coir too

Idk. I made a post in the ask the TC thread yesterday outlining my problems. I started a journal today with that post in it and my next steps. Ive never sterilized coir before, but since I had everything set to test sterilized vs bucket tek, Im trying it out. As I said, it doesn't make sense to me that it's the culprit for my woes.

I've heard people say to hydrate coir and leave it out to see if it spoils, but really that doesn't even make since, because if there are contaminates in your coir, they won't grow on the coir itself because it is inert. And would only have the means to do say by adding nutrition, spawn.
It could very well be your spawn.
