Yeah copper was not a great idea, in hindsight.
The handle has held up well, and I'm standing by that :P

Yalls punch plates are pretty, but if it's destined to be smooshed perhaps more time on all of the other work will be more fruitful.
MacGyver would be proud I'm sure
I'm all for a solid MacGyver moment -- but am also a fan of a scalpel and a sharp blade! Tried and true.

I use my scalpel most of the time. But there are situation that the needle punch can extract clean culture out of a tight spot on a dirty dish..

Fair nuff. Don't tell Josex but I've not tried a needle poke. I have several cases of petris on hand and I'm not afraid of a extra transfers. Plates are much cheaper than cocaine and nobody's ripping me off about it either

I use my scalpel too mostly. I use the punched on the days my hand is fucked up and won't cooperate. I'm on that josex train, as soon as shits clean poke to lc. Or straight to li if I'm doing a small run. I'm going to all bottles though pretty much. It's just easier for me. It's faster and I don't have to do much myco work.

I’ve noticed one common flaw with agar punching in general
Every tool I’ve seen forces the user to have his hand directly above the sample. This is not ideal and can create problems
Ideally the punch tool would allow the users hands to be as far away from the sample as possible while retrieving and/or “punching” the agar disc out
Personally I’m not attracted to punch tools at all but for those lacking in precise hand movements I can see it may be handy. Shaky hand days can be a real bummer, sobriety seems to help a lot tho ime.

I used to punch and ran into that same thought. To fix is i started picking my plates up in my left hand and tilting them so i could punch out the transfers at an angle without my hand going over them. Just a thought.

I made a home-brew punch. It has a plunger in it in case the plug gets stuck inside the stainless tube but that only happens 1 out of 20 times. I hold the plate at a steep angle (nearly 90 degrees) and then punch. That way nothing is over the plate. Then I set the punch down and while keeping the plate at a steep angle, grab my knife and pull the plug out then put it onto the receiving plate.
The only reason I like using a punch is that it helps you see if the mycelium grows evenly and helps you see real sectors better.

Seems like extra work to me just to not use a scalpel. I also dont need to sterilze my scalpel before use. Iso the handle and fresh blades are sterile.
Call me lazy, i guess.

Charcoal blade gang here too
As for a punch and the technique I mentioned above - it’s definitely not fast. If someone were doing 30+ transfers in a sitting I could see what a pain it would be but for a dozen or so it’s fine. To me, the growth pattern and consistency in comparison between plates that using plugs provides is worth it.
