Seeing people die - How common is it? * 1
    #27564032 - 12/01/21 12:27 AM (2 years, 1 month ago)

I have found on the occasion that I do break down in tears and talk about all the dead bodies I've seen and people injured, that people almost always respond and tell me about their stories of dealing with dying people. Non relatives. In some previous career they had.

And none of these people seem to be impacted by it. They are laughing and smiling. Talking about how tough they were or whatever.

How many of them are lying? How common is it for people to see people die? Outside of a hospital bed. And outside of family.

How common is it for people to be devastated by it like I am?

In developing nations its very common to see people die, and in our society its fairly common to.

Its supposed to be horrible, thats what makes you human.

You got holes in your brain if it doesnt phase you.

It might just be a facade.

Was 10 feet from a murder about 2 months ago. Heard the victims wife/girlfriend BAWLING and screaming at his body as the police were trying to revive him.

I was in shock until the following morning. There is no real way to react to it other than just accepting it like anything else. As far as we know, everyone dies eventually. If you have a pessimistic view of death of course you will associate it more with immense grief and discomfort.

Anyway, I recall having go make a choice between letting what I saw seriously fuck me up, or just carrying on. I chose the latter. It is what it is.

I saw my cat die
there was a look of disgust as the painkillers stopped her heart
then her tongue stuck out
it was really said because although she was 15 she still behaved like she was 1 or 2 and she should've lived much longer, had a spine injury causing strokes

I've seen 2 people die- one family member and 1 patient. I have provided palliative care to more people than I can count.

Some deaths are more traumatic than others so I wouldn't worry too much about how other people react to their experience with death compared to yours. If you are struggling with it, I think it is a good idea to talk to someone.

I've seen a couple of murders, an overdose and had a friend die in a car crash with me. All this stuff troubled me. It took a long while for me to really come to terms with some of it. Even now when people I know die it bothers me for a good bit, a mixture of regret and disappointment that they have been shut out of this existence. Time spend wondering about what is and could have been.

Was walking in the shop just this week and it came back to me how we just lost JSB, that he is gone and we'll never speak again and I got to wondering what happened to his dog and how his parents are. Death is really like a pebble in a pond and the ripples travel far and wide before it settles down and becomes just a memory.

One of my earliest memories is of seeing a man take a shotgun blast to the face. I was 3yrs old at the time but it effected me pretty heavy throughout most of my life. Guy died that day. It was a negligent discharge and the family member that i was present with that day did a long prison term for it.

I have been a heavy drug user most of my life. I have been dependent on a small handful of different classes of drugs since i was 15. At 30 im 6 years into being a functional member of society and not being so blasted i can't think anymore to push the trauma from that experience from my mind.

I think that the situation you see a death in has an effect on how it makes you feel. Some random stranger? I may feel a sense of sadness and move on quickly. At a young age it is probably going to effect you more. Something violent or particularly gory like what i saw i think most people would be effected by it regardless of if they knew the person or not.

JSB was a standout member and moderator here who died a little while back, quite suddenly.
