I found entry of this fungi in my local encyclopedia today. It is noted it goes well with some sugar and rum. So just an idea for you consumers of this jelly stuff

I see you're also in the PNW... Any chance you'd consider trading/selling a couple of bottles? I would love to have the opportunity to try a candy cap beer holy shit.

Nice dude! Gotta let us know how it goes!

How are you planning on introducing your candy caps? Just straight dried mushrooms like a dry hop or something else? When I did it, I made up a candy cap tea, and then dumped that in during high krausen. Like I mentioned before, plenty of candy cap flavor in those beers! And what else was cool was that after I made that tea and strained out the mushrooms, there was still plenty of flavor left that I made a simple syrup out of the leftover mushrooms haha! That shit was great on pancakes!

I’ll probably be making up another batch in the next week or two so I’ll let y’all know how that turns out

You missed out on my candy cap giveaway last week!

Also, Rogue brewery makes a candy cap beer I’ve always wanted to try, if you’re near them at all! It’s a pretty seasonal beer, so I’ve heard, so I’m not sure when it’s available...

I don't have access to the marketplace yet, unfortunately, so I couldn't join in on the giveaway. But I will definitely keep my eye open for that beer, I'm usually a fan of Rogue's stuff.

Tis the season. Anyone out here candying P. gelatinosum?

I still haven't had any luck on the candy caps.

Keep looking, they're out there in force right now... find doug fir and don't be afraid to get down and dirty digging through the duff.

separate hauls from this weekend...

Also, I seem to find them so frequently on very decayed wood, so I'll be trying out some experiments and seeing if cultivation is possible. I've also started to collect some of the wood that I find them growing on and  taking them home. Hopefully, they can push up some more fruits!

Some beautiful pseudo hydnies I found in September. Didn't coat them in sugar, just put them raw in juice to absorb it, then ate them.

How far north are candy caps found? I was under the impression they were not found very far north of the OR CA boarder and not further south of Santa Cruz.

My ex made some amazing candy gummies with Pseudohydnum one year, highly recommend.

I keep finding Lactarius spp. that look like candy caps but definitely don't have a maple odor. Do I just have a shitty nose? Should I bring them home and dehydrate them?

The ones I found didn't smell like it until they started to dry in the knit cap on the way home.  That hat smelled like maple forever.  They can be a bit difficult to ID compared to other lactarius out there, that's true.

They are definitely difficult mushrooms to ID correctly cause there are so many lookalikes, and fresh ones don’t really smell that much. (Well the fresh ones do have a unique smell that I can recognize pretty well, but it’s faint).

But the things to pay attention to are:
- dry cap, never viscid or sticky
- wrinkly cap with a ruffled margin
- watery milky latex that doesn’t ever turn yellow
- obviously the maple smell when dried. Try the lighter trick and “dry” one of the caps and see if that  works. That doesn’t always work in the field but sometimes it’s unmistakable.

You got any pics of the ones you’re finding? If you’re not sure, bring them home, dry them and throw them in a jar and smell them the next day. The smell should be pretty strong. I have noticed, however, the smell strengthens with time. The jar of them that I have from a couple years ago is insanely strong!

They are a very common mushroom around here, so I’m sure you’ve walked past many. It took me a while before I got confident enough with what they look like before I realized how many I’ve walked by/thrown out. Good luck!

That definitely describes the ones I've been seeing. I'll bring a lighter with me next time. I also haven't stuck around too long to check if the latex stays white or yellows.

This is great advice.  The cap texture was key for me.
