flipping brf jars?
    #2755904 - 06/02/04 07:06 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I've been reading in different places about how fipping over jars once they are about %75 colonized is beneficial for finishing up complete colonization. Is this only for grain based substrates or can this technique be used with brf jars. If so, aren't you supposed to uncover the innoculation holes(remove the tape) before turning them over? Please let me know if this is true or if i have been misinformed.

Nope, it's very true. take off tape. (I add coffee filter as a dust cover but it's not needed cause of the dry verm layer).

CO2 is heaver then air, so you see how it helps.

Here ya go tek

No it isn't for grains, grains you can shake, jars you can't.
It is used on PF TEK type jars(brf),and yes you need to uncover the innoculation holes to allow for air exchange so the jars will finish colonising.

I personally incubate all of my jars upside down from start to finish.I like to look at them when I do a rutine check, and look for contams. This way I don't have to remove any or handle any of them.
But this is only MY METHOD and I don't think it matters ,but it is more of a prefference of mine.

Usually you flip the jars only when you notice sign's of slowed or stalled growth near the bottom of the jars, you flip them to create a larger air pocket on the bottom(due to shrinkage of cake)so they can finish up.

I see. I'll probably wait a few days until they are a bit closer to completely colonized before i flip them. Thanks so much for the info.

its also better for air exchange i use a similar method but i take 1 tape off after the bottom colonizes and it goes FAST.
