Given the clear warts on the cap (remnants of the universal veil), that is clearly an Amanita. There are several Amanitas with cap colors near that, and the volva isn't clearly visible in the photo, so an ID to species will not be possible.

Remember that if you want an ID of a mushroom you find, you need to pick it. There are some distinctive species that are exceptions to that rule, but the majority of mushrooms will need more detail than a photo like that one shows.

That's an excellent photo - great focus.

Happy mushrooming!

i didn't take the picture to get it ID'ed i am takin a plant id class and thought the mushroom would be nice to have with the bellis perennis, and figured it'd be kewl to have the species of the mushroom. like i said i think its amanita velosa but i dunno, yeah thanks on the complement of the photo, i just got my digi a couple months ago, was planning on makin a post this fall for who can take the best mushroom pictures, its a minolta f300, 5megapixels :-) i love it

I'm pretty sure it isn't Amanita velosa. If it were, instead of those little warts on the cap we should see relatively large patches of universal veil tissue. Also, it should have a conspicuous, deep, cup shaped volva at the base of the stem. Your photo leads me to suspect that we'd more likely see no obvious volva or maybe a ridged volva on a bulbous stem base.

A couple of wild guesses off the top of my head would be Amanita rubescens or Amanita crenulata.

A couple things might help us make a semi-wild guess. What part of the world/country was it? What time of year was it?

Happy mushrooming!

Did your mushroom have white gills. Amanitas grow in association with other trees. and usually not in grassy areas.

Are the gills white or chocolate to ressish brown?

mj

If the gills are not white than I doubt that it is an Amanita.

Also the amanita rubescens grow around Oak and white pine.

mj

i talked with my mycology teacher at college he said it looks like the rubescens and it was around oak and conifers, so it very well could be.
