color variation in sub generation??? question please.
    #2754378 - 06/01/04 07:13 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

okay, i couldnt find this question in any data. i had this very fine pan sub patch of possibly 40-50, a few pan foes in there as well. well it is now a week and a half later. the second generation of them are growing. some of them the same color with dark brown middle with the distinct tip and a band on the outside... black spore prints. now some of them are a greyish color with the same kind of bands. and also have a blackspore print.. with almost the same look as the dark brownish ones. has anyone had this happen to them, or do they think these are different mushrooms. because all the pictures on the web show this variation, but they are still off what mine look like.

if you think my post is stupid, then i apoligize.

again 1 more comment. i think this could be from lack of rain in last week. the week b4 the first generation had recived a lot more moisture. this could actually make sense?

Do they bruise blue? If yes... i'd be checking to see if the grey ones are growing from the same patches of mycelium as the brown ones, (eg. are there brown and grey ones growing right next to one another? Or are they just in the same garden/park bead?)
ope that helps a little

well the subbs didnt bruise blue in the first place. due to me livin in eastern states... not sure if they even bruise blue in the us of a. and secondly im not sure if they are in the same mycelium. but they are however at least 5 inches away from eachother if not a tad bit closer.

i also found this on erowid "T here are several distinct subtypes of Pa. subbalteatus, this is the most common one." (referring to the first batch of the ones i found)..

so im quite stumpped, anyone else had the 2 differnt variations of subbs?

I recently picked subbs in NJ, and one out of the 5 I found bruised noticeably blue at the base, so it does happen.

sorry to double-post. I think the most likely candidate for color variation is variation in the environment: age of shrooms, exposure to sunlight, low humidity. Mushrooms are tricky because they are so variable.
