i have been seeing ALOT of bullshit,bogus,mis-identifications lately

people should not do this,it really is dangerous

alot of people depend on this site for I.D. purposes and mis-indentifications could get someone killed

im not going to call anyone out but you know who you are

i think people should get banned for giving the same bogus I.D. bullshit info over and over

you would think people would get the hint when they get flamed for doing it

i guess not

i have been here a long time and i NEVER give an ID if im not sure on it

no one else should either

This is one of the rules that we enforce very strictly, and we've been talking about it a bit. We're keeping track of those who repeatedly give out bad advice and we're trying to talk to them to see if we can make things work. We have seen some improvments but some people are going to end up getting ultimatiums if they don't quit: stop with the bad advice or expect to be banished from the land... FOREVER.  :smirk:

Over the past few months, we have banned several people for giving bad information.

First is a warning, second is a 3-day ban, and if they are really bad, its a perma.

There is some information in Gumby's thread about this.

But, I totally agree with you about the misinformation. It seems like no matter what we do, there will always be plenty of ignorance to go around in this forum.

thats why I think the FAQ is so important: it lists the names of people who can be trusted.

btw... I'm surprised DH hasnt been added to this, I made a thread about it awhile back but nothing happened :smirk:

We've had some problems with people making incorrect IDs. Don't take everyone's word as valid when asking for an identification. Taking the wrong person's advice could get you killed in this hobby. Be careful.

Experienced people who can be trusted with mushroom identification are (this list will grow over time):

-Mushroom Hunting Forum Moderators (GumbyDude, ToxicMan, Remy, angryshroom)

-LizardKing
-Mr. Mushrooms

We completely agree, that's why we're being real nazi's about the no misinformation rule.

I believe we've banned about 3 people for breaking this rule... So let it be known this rule is enforced and the consequences of breaking it are fairly severe.

As far as the weiliis go, the only patches I check are in Gwinnett, and I haven't found a damn one.  :mad2:

Re the dodgy ID's, I guess it's important that peeps requesting them realise the limitations of an 'internet' ID too...

Of course there will always be the possibility of 'bad advice' from someone that thinks they know more than they do, though sometimes this may be given in good faith out of 'enthusiasm to contribute' rather than straight up stupidity or irresponsibility. Hence the 1 'warning' system before a 3 day ban is good.

As a safe-guard against this, those requesting ID's should also wait for a couple of opinions, and look for accompanying reasons that the poster has based their decision on, to get a sense of whether or not they know what they're on about. Of course if one of the gurus (the list of 'A1' Id'ers is good) offers an ID, then probably pretty safe to trust that without necessarilly waiting for further opinions.

Lastly, it's often not possible to give an exact species, sometimes even with the best information/ pics. The ID'ers are always quick to point this out where applicable which is good, the main problem seems to be that peeps requesting ID's (especially if they're new to the site) don't realise this at first... ("Heres a pic of a mushroom I found in a garden bed yesterday morning, sorry about the focus, ID please ..." and the like).
So that's my 2c worth, most dodgy or 'too hasty' ID's I've seen on here ultimately derive from bad initial ID request posts (which does not excuse them, of course).

I too get ticked off about the advice from people who so do not knwo what they are talking about. It hurts everyone here to have someone do it continuously.

And I too have warned several of it. The point is that no newbies should be giving any kind of ID advice, not even saying yeah it looks like.

This does not help anyone. Or agreeing with another low number posting newbie that their advice is correct.

I notice that newbies with 3, 4 5 or evern 10-20 posts always support each others coments and sometimes some of them sound like the same person using two different names. I realize that also is sometimes a problem. Or certain posers who answer their own first questions in a second post with another wquestion.

mj

This has to stop and all of us moderators have to clamp down on it.
Also people who post and get good information and then keep coming back with , "Oh that is too complicated and then ask more quetions which are sometimes answered and then they still want more infor and really do not read the facts.

Maybe some of them cannto read and only want to see the pictures.

Shit, people in the 1970s and 1980s ripped doxzens of imafges form mushroom books, journals and other works form libraries and from bookstores. Even one of my published papers had pictures excised form it a tthe U or W int he chemistry library.

And my safe-pik guide, the downtown Seattle library use to have 12 copies of that book and several branches also had it. Within the first year it was int he public library, almost 50 photographs were ripped m from most of their copies.

Both my first books are intact at the U of W inthe Northwest Special collections room and you have to leave youre ID and look at it and then return it to the desk to get your Id p back and they look over the material to make sure no one has clipped any of it.

You do not need to go to school at the University. The libraries are open to all who come in.

mjshroomer. IF you really need to read it there is a copy posted at Erowid.com

NO one on the planet could legally identify a mushroom via pictures or descriptions on the internet. One must have the mushroom present to make a valid ID, even then mistakes are made, even by the EXPERTS in the field of mycology.

I think the effort is helpful though. As long as everyone understands the limits of this endeavor. The disclaimer at the door helps, but I think over confidence of some of the more seasoned members can be equally dangerous as the guy with 10 posts and his buddies with 20, and 30 posts. Assumption is the enemy.

Personally I would not give an ID without having possesed the mushroom. I would say that it looks like a ....., or maybe a ..... Just make sure it is not...... based on......

Just me though. ID away.
