misc. Linux questions
    #2754847 - 06/01/04 11:26 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Do you prefer KDE or GNOME? Personally I use KDE and I'm trying to get my computer as standardized as possible (insomuch as Linux has standards). What do more people use? Oh yeah,I've heard that KDE is technically not completely GPL because of the widget it uses. Can someone clear this up?

I've recently heard that XFree has changed it's license,so a lot of distros are using X.org now. Are they completly compatible with each other?

More questions to come...

I consider both gnome and kde to be bloatware, and I use Enlightenment. I don't know anything about KDE's license.

X.org started started from a copy of Xfree86 4.3's code, so it's compatible with everything made for Xfree 4.3. X.org will presumably grow more different from Xfree as time goes on.

Slackware developer Patrick Volkerding says this:
"Switched to X11R6.7.0 from X.Org. Thanks to those who sent comments to x@slackware.com. Seems the community has spoken, because the opinions were more than 4 to 1 in favor of using the X.Org release as the default version of X. I think I've heard just about every side to this issue now, and it was only after careful consideration and testing that this decision was made. It's primarily (as is usual around here) a technical decision. Nearly everyone else is going with X.Org and it seems to me that sticking with XFree86 it spite of this would be asking for compatibility trouble (indeed, we saw some issues between X.Org and XFree86 4.4.0 until a few things in XFree86 were patched). I also noticed that the ATI Radeon binary drivers designed for XFree86 4.3.0 do not work with XFree86 4.4.0, but do work with the X.Org release. Something I'm *not* in favor of is dragging around two nearly identical projects, so XFree86 4.4.0 has been moved to the /pub/slackware/unsupported/ directory on the FTP site."

I use dropline gnome.

Dropline Gnome switched from XFree86 to X.org recently and caused me to reinstall Slack and Dropline. Sure there were other ways but reinstalling Slack and Dropline was the easiest way.

After trying the Knoppix live cd I have decided to use KDE and perhaps run a Debian distro.

Linux has plenty standards that most desktop GUI environments are compliant with (certainly XFree and X.org).

I use KDE as well, I'm of the strong opinion Gnome is too bloated and both aesthetically & ergonomically displeasing. What the heck were they smoking when they designed Nautilus?

X.org is forked from Xfree 4.3.x; so on that level they are totally compatible. Things like your ATI and Nvidia graphics cards designed for one will work on the other ...

I use KDE, it's full featured, very appealing and easy to work with.
