Just a wives tale or truth?
    #2754473 - 06/01/04 09:40 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Before I started reading into mushroom cultivation
I was told that when you grow shrooms, you could
reuse them or regrow them but after the 4th time
they become deadly or maybe poisonious. I never
really understood what they meant until I started
reading this website but now I know the concept
of flusing. My question is, if you even are able
to get 4-5 flushes out of a cake/case, will it
still be safe for human consumption, especially
in the case of very high dosages.

You are pretty likely to get some sort of bacterial or mold contamination by the fouth or fifth flush which in most all cases makes the shrooms inedible. Some contamination produces toxic substances which are in turn picked up by the shrooms and delivered to your system via your mouth. Some people are just highly allergic to molds which may grow on the substrate and thus become a part of the shroom and can cause serious allergic reaction and possibly death.
The bottom line here is that growing requires the diligent study of every way a grow can go wrong and what the consequences are. Some people are able to succesfully get more than 4 or 5 flushes without any contamination and those shrooms are totally fine to eat.

I hope this answers your question. Basically it isnt the shrooms, but the uptake of possible toxins within their substrate that makes them have potential for problems.

Just wondering, how long does it take from picking until it is time to harvest a 2nd flush usually?

Usually, around 5 to 10 days

thats exactly what i was thinking. it's most likely where the myth came from. I heard a similar one, where this guy told me my mushrooms would be poisonous, if i messed up. (legal shrooms of course)

Its not going to turn the mushrooms to poionous ones, but the cake will get exhausted after 3rd or 4th flush therefor not producting
mushrooms and get contaminated, thats about it tho.

I've never had any visual confirmation of any bacteria or molds from a healthy cake once its at its later flushes.
