tinge of red in jars
    #2754459 - 06/01/04 09:38 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

hi all. my gnome is n00b. He is cultivating PES hawaiian mycelium in 4 jars. 2 of the jars have a small reddish patch. It doesnt look like a contam more like a bit of discoloured substrate. Anyway I thought Id post to check.

You need to give it a little time, and see if it spreads. It may be a problem.

ok the red didnt grow any more and the mycelium almost full covered it now. But now there is some kind of weird blue bacteria in 2 of the jars. It looks like pf substrate but a dark blue colour. And it has spread since I seen it first. Should he cut it off or chuck out the whole cake?

It could be bruising.
Anyway, a pic would help.

ok I took some really crappy pics real quick coz my cam was running out of power. but i think u will get the idea

Jar 1

this pic shows how it overgrown the red thing

this is a shot with about 3 contam looking things. a yellow/brown thing on the left a black spot at the bottom and a bit of that blue stuff

Jar 2

here is a better shot of the blue contam

Jar 3

uncontaminted i think innoculated with syringe

Jar 4

uncontaminated i hope this one was innoculated with an agar wedge of myc

forgot to add - they are growing slow as hell it has already been a month. Probly took 2-3 week for myc to germinate. I cant incubate tho coz my waterheater broke and it can get down to 10 C here right now. Will this affect my shroomage yield?

I hate to say it but It looks like they are comtaminated to me. The white growth looks like it is touching the side of the jar and looks cottony. It's hard to tell just looking at the pictures. Be careful and start another batch just in case.

You really have to be careful in assuming that mycelium has overgrown a mold.  What you see as green/pink/yellow/whatever is often just a part of the mold, the part that is producing spores.  Most molds have an essentially 'white' vegetative state, meaning that it is very easy for bits of it to be invisible amongst mycelium.  Often mycelium can win out and destroy the invader, but you shouldn't assume that things are fine just because they're white.  Any of those jars that have had tinges of mold growth should be tossed, or at the very least birthed in quarantine
Post-birth it will become apparant if there is a problem.

thanks for the reply. I see what ur saying but Im positive jars 3 and 4 is mycelium only ive looked very closely (Ive seen white contams on agar b4 2). Ill probly throw away the 1st jar. What about jar 2 should i toss that too? Do you think its possible to fruit the contaminated jars and pick the mushrooms if they look healthy?

You could just refrain from tossing any of the jars, that seems like a bit of a waste to me. Just let them grow in their seperated jars, and see what happens. If it becomes apparent that the jars are overwhelmed with contams, you could throw them out, but I dont really see the point in risking chunking potentially good cakes. If later on, one jar is about halfway colonized, you could just take out the cake and slice off the contamed area, and birth it seperately. You could use the 2-liter bottle method for individual terrariums... Just don't waste your fscking cakes.

All jars look fine except jar 2. You should toss that one.
Tossing jar 1 is a cautious move, are you cautious ?

"Do you think its possible to fruit the contaminated jars and pick the mushrooms if they look healthy?"

Only for spore printing purposes but this is also a risky move. Think of it as a last resort if you don't have any spores left....
