Casing for Dummies question
    #2754276 - 06/01/04 08:30 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I have read the Casing for Dummies Tek and find that the author does not refer to sterilizing his vermiculite casing material.  Is this for a reason or is the author assuming that I know to do this already, (in which case I wouldn't be quite the dummy he wrote it for...)  If he did over look it, what would you suggest as the easiest method to sterilize the casing materials?

Thanks for your patients with the Noob here.  Love this site, great info!

Well,IMHO,you are asking for trouble if you bypass the sterility factor when preparing your casing material, regardless of what it is.

Slightly overwetting the casing material and nuking it for a few minutes a few times is pretty easy, but probably not as reliable as the oven or the pc. If you go with the oven do the same thing as nuking just make sure you cover it well with foil to keep evaporation at a minimum. I would go with about 300deg for about 45min and then let it cool for several hours before you use it.

By the way,it seems you arent a dummy at all as you have asked a good question based on good common sense!!

Good Luck

I know a guy who, when he used straight verm, never sterilized. He used distilled water, and never had a problem with that method.
