How far up? Based on the fact that this phenotype appears to be isolated to the rivers flood plain in southern pa and Maryland, it is likely being washed from an upstream location. It’s entirely possible that they are not found above a certain point on the river. I believe people have posted that they grow in a more widespread manner in central pa, it’s likely that this is the source.
Since they don’t seem to be found after the Susquehanna empties into the bay, I’m assuming the salt water sterilizes the colonized wood. Does that happen? The upper bay isn’t as salty as the ocean but is definitely a salt water environment.

Middle of Luzerne county around Wilkes Barre and also closer to Berwick both in flood plains. I am not sure what salt does, but have a feeling a lot of mushrooms do not like salty areas and die unless that is where they are usually found/what they like.

Ovoids originally from the Ohio river valley around me not doing anything but eating more wood right now. I was hoping for maybe a little something from mulch beds or in the woods spots, but nope. I covered most of the patches with leaves for the winter. I will take another look if we get a warm stretch.
Sounds as if I need to get some Susquehanna genetics going. Unfortunately that is like an 8hr drive from where I am at or I would do a road trip next spring.

The one that comes up the most in the fall there is the big nipply sort of variety... quite a bit of different morph...also got a whole bunch of spring like rains here this year... had 3 or more flushes... one in mid September or so... huge ones at one spot... they come back in the fall better if it’s a spot that doesn’t use a plant that dies in the fall for shade... so not under knotweed, flowers, burdock...etc riverbanks don’t seem to be nearly as prolific as chips in the fall... chips are nearly the same this year

Growing from wood chips beside a mulch path in a moist area littered with leaves, sticks, and small plants. There was Japanese Knotweed and celandine nearby which are said to be indicators.
