Not true, if it was then in northern climates mushrooms would have died off, come to think of it, mushrooms wouldn't exsist anywhere due to the many colder periods in history.

I just got a shitake block from FP, and I thought it was interesting that in following the instructions first I put it in the fridge for 3-5 days, then soaked it in water for 24 hours. It was just like a cake only about 50 times bigger, now following instructions, I am misting it directly 3 times a day, the terarrium is a plastic bag over it with holes punched in it. I would like to grow some other mushrooms this way.

So the dunk tek isn't hippie's or opies, or maybe stamets got it from them, doubt it.
