Magic mushroom clue to death fall

A MAN who fell to his death from a Salford tower block of flats is believed to have eaten magic mushrooms hours earlier.

The family of Robert McCracken, 32, is still waiting for answers to the mystery three months after his death.

Mr McCracken was found dead outside Briar Hill Court, a council-owned block at Salford Precinct, Pendleton, in March. He had fallen from his window 23 storeys up.

Robert's family say police are looking into claims that he bought magic mushrooms at a herbal shop during a night out in Manchester.

Shortly after he returned to his apartment he plunged from the window.

Police are still investigating Robert's death to prepare a report for the coroner. Officers have visited a shop in Manchester as part of their investigation and are awaiting the results of toxicology tests.

Robert's father, Jimmy, of Haslingden, said: "What I and the family need are answers. I would sooner it was a totally stupid accident in which something has gone wrong. I could live with that.

"But not knowing is putting a lot of doubt into my head about what happened."

After leaving Haslingden High School, Robert worked for a fencing firm in Baxenden. As a schoolboy he was a promising soccer player and had trials at Preston North End.

But he was drawn into experimenting with drugs as he grew older.

Mr McCracken, 56, added: "He was into drugs, I don't deny it. He went to live in Salford to get away from the stuff around here and was doing really well."

There are 12 main varieties of magic mushroom growing naturally in the UK, with the main type called liberty cap. They produce a hallucinogenic effect similar to LSD.

It is not against the law to possess raw magic mushrooms, but the moment they are "prepared" by being dried, stewed or packaged, they are regarded by the courts as a Class A drug.

That has produced a legal framework which allows magic mushrooms to be sold in their natural state but threatens anyone caught taking the mushrooms home and preparing them - with a prison sentence of up to seven years.

The owner of one shop in Manchester where the mushrooms are sold at ?15-a-box told the M.E.N. they were marketed responsibly and according to the law.

He said: "Staff at the shop are very careful about how the mushrooms are sold and do not allow anyone under 18 to buy them or anyone who is obviously unfit to do so."

Police said they could not comment on the investigation into Robert's death.

I hope this guy wasn't on mushrooms when he fell to his death, it would be a perfect story to get fresh mushrooms illegal for you guys in the UK and ruin it for everybody else who is responsible in their magic mushrooms consumption.
