Oregon's medicinal psychedelic mushrooms program moves forward November 8, 2021 - Portland Business Journal
One year ago last week, Oregon voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure to create the first regulated psilocybin therapy system in the U.S.
The program governing psychedelic mushrooms won't completely roll out until early 2023, but licensure, accountability and safety standards are in the works. A 17-member Oregon Psilocybin Advisory Board, appointed by Gov. Kate Brown, has been meeting throughout 2021, formulating recommendations to send to the Oregon Health Authority for approval.
“We’re on track,” said Advisory Board Chair Tom Eckert, who was the driving force behind Measure 109 with his late wife Sheri. “It’s complex. We knew it would be, but the advisory board is very dedicated. We need to be ahead of the game, we need trained practitioners and products right out of the gate.”
Psilocybin, a psychedelic drug sometimes called “magic mushrooms,” has shown promise in treating PTSD, anxiety and addiction. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has designated it as a breakthrough therapy for treating depression. In July, the board published an evidence review concluding that the active ingredient in psychedelic mushrooms holds promise in addressing mental health issues.
OHA set up the Oregon Psilocybin Services section to implement M109, which passed in November 2020 with 56% of the vote. OHA is charged with licensing and regulating the manufacture, transportation, delivery, sale and purchase of psilocybin products and provision of services.
Once the program is in place, the therapy will only be available through licensed providers.
“I’m sure there will be significant demand,” said Eckert, a psychotherapist and co-founder of the Oregon Psilocybin Society. “We want to move forward carefully and cautiously and develop a program that will sustain us into the future, meet the demand and bring healing to Oregon.”
About six weeks after the ballot measure passed, tragedy struck for the Eckerts. Sheri Eckert died in her sleep due to cardiac arrest. Tom established the Sheri Eckert Foundation to provide scholarships to allow equitable access to psilocybin facilitator therapy training, once programs get underway in 2022.
“The mission of the foundation is to ensure that Oregon’s evolving psilocybin services ecosystem includes participants from diverse backgrounds and means,” Eckert said. “It’s super important to have representation in the practitioner realm.”
OHA is holding a public listening session on Dec. 13 to take feedback on products and testing and one on Dec. 14 to hear from the public about psilocybin facilitators and training programs.
