Getinmybelly's Distilled Growing Guide for the Monotub Beginner (with references)
    #27532860 - 11/06/21 06:39 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I wanted to write a guide for a total beginner, assuming they know absolutely nothing about the process of growing shrooms, because that was me not long ago. The information available on this website is vast, and there is more than enough info here to grow any type of mushroom in a variety of ways. However, as a complete and utter n00b I found it a little difficult to distill the enormity of info here down into a process that would work for me. I am not blaming anyone but myself for my failures, which were all due to impatience and a lack of research, but I hope that this guide proves useful for those just getting into it.

DISCLAIMER (added in edit): I have been using a spores to grain method, but this guide works equally well for this method or an agar method. Inoculating grain with spores isn't as reliable as starting a grow with agar and will not produce the quantity and quality that you could get with agar, and it increases your chance of contamination. However, doing so allows you to skip a few steps and still have a high chance of achieving success as long as you get your spore syringe from a reliable source, in which case it should be completely sterile. I have used this method successfully twice now and the risk of contamination from the syringes I have used seems to have been very low. I want to reiterate that AGAR IS BETTER IN EVERY WAY! The only reason I do spores to grain is because I am LAZY! If you want to achieve the perfect grow, you should start with agar and replace the spores to grain inoculation step in this guide with an agar method. Otherwise, the steps are exactly the same. Read below for links on how to grow with agar, do some research on the risks of spores to grain if you want to, and make decisions for yourself.

I have three successful grows under my belt, one long ago using the PF tek and two recently with monotubs.

Here are pictures of the first tub I was able to achieve some success with:

These are all pictures of the first flush, which didn’t all happen at once. In an ideal situation, the entire flush would occur at once and I would have gotten more out of it, but I used too little spawn for the amount of substrate I was using.

Here are a couple pics of my more recent and more successful grow, which was much better due to using the correct amount of spawn (about 3x the amount as my first grow, also used a larger 32L monotub). The first flush pictured here came much more evenly and I got much more out of it. This was also due to making a better liner and setting up a monotub with better air flow.

I included this last pic to show a strange mutant mushroom with a mushroom growing upside down out of its cap. With a spores to grain method, you are more likely to get this kind of mutation as I understand it, because when you start a grow with agar, I believe you are isolating a stronger genetic profile for your grow. Spore syringes contain a variety of genetics including weird mutants like this, which are not dangerous but don't look as pretty and your mushrooms won't achieve the same size and uniformity. Even though this result was far better than my first monotub, I'm sure agar would produce an even better result. The blank area in this tub may also be due to not using agar, but I'm not sure exactly the reason for that.

My intention with this guide is to organize the already available info and thorough guides that I have used into one post. I am doing this both as a way to give back to the community that helped me get to where I am and so I can direct friends here when they ask about how to grow.

The PF Tek is widely used as a first time growing option, but I would recommend starting off with a small monotub. The reason being that the monotub is completely scalable, you can apply the exact same principles to a tiny shoebox sized tub as you would to a 116 quart monster tub.

The main reason to use the PF Tek IMO is so if one or two of your cakes get contaminated, you still have others. If your monotub gets contaminated you have to toss the whole thing. However, contamination is pretty easy to control for. You always have a chance of getting unlucky, but the conditions needed for a successful grow can easily be achieved in any living situation. You don’t need a completely sterile environment to successfully grow.

I suggest starting with a smaller tub, around 20-32L, because there is less to lose if you do get contamination and it will still produce a great amount, but feel free to use any size you want. This guide is geared towards a smaller grow, but can be scaled up. There are many pictures of the whole process in the links in this post, so for photo references, refer to those links.

Here is a list of all of the equipment and materials needed:

-Pressure cooker (Manual or electric, large is better)

-Plastic storage container (this is just one of many options, just make sure that you get a container that is at least 8 inches tall and ideally has no handle or anything on top but a clear lid)

-32oz wide mouth mason jars (at least 3)

-Polyfill

-Disposable gloves

-Rubbing alcohol

-Paper towels

-Lighter

-Aluminum foil

-5 gallon water cooler

-Mist bottle

-Reflective dome light

-Timer outlet

-Compact fluorescent lightbulb (15W)

-Coco coir

-Wheat berries (or oats, or bird seed, or a variety of other types of grain)

-Space heater (if your room is less than 70F)

-Fan to circulate air in the room

-Medical grade face mask/N95 mask

-Spore syringe (which you can get from any number of websites that are sponsors of this site. Just pick the strain that looks most fun to you, they are all good. But make sure you’re buying Psilocybe cubensis spores and not another type of mushroom spores)

-Drill

-0.25” drill bit

-1-1.25” hole saw drill attachment

-Scale

-Large trash bags

-Duct tape or masking tape for constructing liner

-Scissors or razor blade for trimming liner

-Food dehydrator

Still air box (optional but highly recommended)

Method:

The simplest effective method I’ve found on this site is to only use one type of grain for the initial spawn that you inoculate with spores or agar, in my case that is wheat berries, and coco coir for the monotub growing substrate. Coco coir is dehydrated coconut husk, and it is the perfect medium for growing shrooms in. I found this out from Bod’s Easy AF guides which were my primary resource. Many people add other materials and nutrients to their substrates, but for me, there’s no reason to use anything but coco coir since it works and is cheap.

Agar is what is inside petri dishes (as well as other nutrients), and people use it to start their grows, get better results, and control for contamination. It is a great way of starting a grow, and is superior in pretty much every way. The reason I haven’t used it yet is simply out of laziness, but I plan to try it soon, and it really doesn’t seem that hard, but you do need to be more careful about contamination when dealing with it and should definitely build a still air box or SAB when working with it. You can read all about the benefits of agar and how to start a grow with agar here.

Instead of agar, you can inject spores directly onto grain in 32oz jars. This eliminates the need for agar, but will result in a grow that isn't as good (lower yield and risk of contamination from spore syringe). However, it can work with a high rate of success if you get a spore syringe from a good place that is sterile.

The first step in growing shrooms is to prepare your grain. You’ll need 220g of dry grain per 32oz jar for this first step (according to Bod). Your total number of jars needed depends on your grow size. Consult the guides mentioned in this post for the exact amount you should be using for your size of monotub, but for a 32L or smaller tub, 3 is enough. Even if you lose one or two to contamination, you can still use the rest to either spawn more jars or do a grow in a small tub.

The main guide I followed for preparing grain is Bod’s oat prep tek,
which can be applied to any grain. However, I would recommend to not boil your grain for any longer than 35 minutes, and potentially less, you want the grains to just barely be starting to burst. Make sure to let the grain dry and cool thoroughly in a colander before putting into jars.

After you have evenly packed your jars (there will be extra space at the top, which you want), put the lids on UPSIDE DOWN and screw them down, then cover with aluminum foil. The reason to put the lids on upside down is so they don’t get vacuum sealed to the tops of the jars, requiring you to pry them open and also suck lots of air into the jars when doing so. If the lids are upside down, they won’t get stuck like this, and the aluminum foil prevents water from getting in during the sterilization process.

Put the jars into your pressure cooker with enough water so the water level is about halfway up the jars, but no more, and pressure cook on high for 2 hours to sterilize them. You’ll want to use a trivet or something at the bottom of the pressure cooker to prevent the jars from making direct contact with the bottom, which will weaken and potentially break your jars. See Bod’s pressure cooking tek.

Let the pressure cooker de-pressurize for around 30 minutes and then open it up. Let the jars cool completely after taking them out, until they are cool to the touch, before inoculating.

In the meantime, you can prepare your polyfill lids. Take jar lids and drill a ¼’’ hole in the center and stuff with polyfill. See these links for pics and details:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24125953

https://www.shroomery.org/13874/Lids-and-Filters

I prefer these lids over the other types because the polyfill is an effective air filter and it’s very easy to do. Then it’s time for inoculation.

If using agar skip this next step. If doing spores to grain:

Get your spore syringe and put a pair of gloves on, and optionally, a face mask, especially if doing this outside of an SAB. I would recommend using an SAB but I personally did not and ended up being fine. Shake up the syringe, then use a lighter to heat the metal tip of your syringe for a few seconds, then leave it to cool for a minute or so.

Then, carefully lift the lid slightly off of each jar and squirt in a few CCs of spore solution onto the top layer of grain, and replace the lid as quickly as possible. I try to inoculate them with equal amounts of solution so they grow evenly. I try and evenly divide one 10cc syringe between three jars.

NOTE: You should probably only attempt a spores to grain grow if you're getting your syringe directly from a reputable, professional source. If you make your own syringes, unless you are preparing them in a totally sterile environment, you're most likely going to get contamination.

Then get your polyfill lids and quickly swap them out for the regular lids and screw them down (doesn’t matter if they’re right side up or upside down, but Bod prefers them upside down).

Step 1 is now complete!

Now let the jars sit in your empty monotub or any clean area. At this point, you’ll want to set up your fluorescent light and timer so that there are 12 hours of light each day shining in the vicinity of your jars, but not too close to them (reference link)

Make sure your room is between 70-80F. This is where a space heater might be necessary if you're growing in a cold time of year. 70 or even slightly less is ok, but it should be somewhat warm in your grow area.

The jars will take 3-4 weeks or so to fully colonize if you use spores straight to grain. If you use agar, it will be much faster. If you see anything except for clean white mycelium growing, they are probably contaminated. However, I noticed that there was some slight discoloration on the top of the grain in the jars that I thought could be mold, but after successfully growing with the grain and from inspecting it before adding it to my tub, I believe this was just some mycelium oxidizing and turning slightly blue, as shrooms do when you bruise them.

Pic of jar around 2 weeks after inoculation with spores:

Jars after 4 weeks - ready to spawn:

After jars are fully colonized it's time to

Prepare Your Monotub

If you are working in anything less than a very, very clean room, I would recommend using a hole saw to make holes to be stuffed with polyfill for air filtration. People have gotten great results using unmodified monotubs but it makes more sense to me to use polyfill to filter the air to reduce the risk of contamination especially if working in a regular living situation where things aren’t totally clean and sterile.

I won’t go into that much detail about how to prepare monotubs because there is so much info available. I found Pastywhyte’s writeup on mini monos very helpful. Here is another great guide on monotubs (by Spitball).

The main thing to consider here is whether or not you’re going to use a casing layer. This helps increase humidity on the surface of the growing substrate, and you can allow for more fresh air exchange (FAE) when using one (according to Pastywhyte). He says that if you’re not using a casing layer, which I don’t because I am lazy, then you can get away with one hole for air flow drilled on each of the long sides of your tub if your tub is small. You will also want two holes on opposite ends (lengthwise) near the top of your tub. See Spitball’s guide.

Use your 1-1.25” hole saw (or 1.5”, but that’s probably better for larger tubs) to drill holes as necessary. I would recommend that the bottom of each hole be no less than 3.5” from the bottom of the tub. Probably safer to have it be 4” at least, but your substrate will be around 2.5”-3.5”.

After preparing your tub, it’s time to get the coco coir ready.

For this, you will need the water cooler. According to Bod, you will use 5x the amount of water per weight of coco coir to hydrate the coir. He says that using 5x might be too much for some coir. It’s probably best to test out some of the coir you buy to make sure it doesn’t get too liquidy adding 5x the amount of water. If it is soupy, add 4x the amount. But you do want it to be fluffy and moist. See his guide on preparing coir for the whole process on how to do this.

The amount of coir you will need will depend on the size of your tub. For a 54 quart Sterilite tub, which is what Bod’s guide is for, to achieve around a 3” substrate, he uses 650g of coir. The main thing here is the bottom dimensions of your tub. The 54Q tub in Bod’s guide has bottom dimensions of 22.5”x16”. Multiplied together, that is 360 square inches. Take the bottom dimensions of your tub, multiply them together, divide by 360, and multiply that by 650g of coir. That will give you approximately the amount of coir you’ll need. Then use Bod’s method with the water cooler for preparing your coir.

According to Pastywhyte, the amount of grain spawn and substrate can vary, but you can use 3 full quarts of spawn in a small tub. However, if you’ve lost 1 or even 2 of the 3 jars to contamination, you can still achieve a decent grow. The more spawn you use, the more shrooms you’ll end up with in the end, though. This is also why I think it’s smart to leave a little extra room when you drill your air flow holes in your monotub, in case you’re using more spawn. Refer to Bod’s guides for more information on the amount of substrate and spawn you should be using.

Refer to Bod again for how to shake up your grain jars and mix with coir.

He does not use a plastic liner in his tubs, but I would recommend that you do. This will prevent side pinning and will make it easier to lift the substrate out of the tub for harvesting. The plastic liner can be made from a large trash bag or you can custom make one like Spitball does in his guide (linked previously). Just make sure that before you add your coir and grain, that the liner goes as far as possible into the corners of the tub so you don’t have areas of the substrate that are much thicker than others. Before mixing, be sure to clean your tub very well before using and sanitize by rubbing some rubbing alcohol all over it with a paper towel.

After mixing everything up and getting the surface nice and even, it’s time to trim away the plastic liner with a razor blade so it’s just above the surface of the substrate, a tiny bit below your air flow holes. Then, fill your holes with polyfill, tightly stuffed, and place your light directly on top of the lid of your tub. Having a fan and/or heater blowing in your room is helpful to introduce a good amount of fresh air exchange. You need air flowing for the conditions in your tub to be right.

Now you’re almost done!

The hard part is over, now you just have to wait. 10-14 days after mixing you should see pins start to form. If the surface of your substrate looks dry, open the lid of your tub and lightly mist the surface. This can be done daily, but only if it seems like your tub is getting too dry. You should see a lot of condensation on the walls of the tub.

Now it’s just a matter of harvesting your hard-earned product. If your flush occurs all at once, which is ideal, it’s best to remove the whole substrate block and use a knife to cut the mushrooms off at the base or carefully twist and pull them off, but a knife is what most people use. Some shrooms will reach maturity before others, but the consensus on this site seems to be that you should harvest the entire flush at once, around the time when most of the shrooms' veils begin the break. If you wait longer, they'll grow bigger but will be less potent. Use gloves and optionally a mask when doing this. Also be sure to pick all side pins off of the sides and bottom, peeling back your liner to do so. You shouldn't have many or any side pins if you made a good liner. Then place the shrooms in your food dehydrator at max heat for at least 8 hours or until they are cracker dry. You’ll need to cut the caps off of larger shrooms to fit in the dehydrator. Then store in an airtight container in a cool place if you plan to use them soon, otherwise vacuum seal and freeze them and they will last indefinitely. You can also take spore prints and make your own syringes from your shrooms.

You may want to dunk your substrate block between flushes. Here’s some info on that, but I’d recommend doing more research on this, because I haven’t done it myself. You may want to just mist instead. Seems like if your substrate block is super solid and covered in mycelium, it’s a good idea, but my spores to grain grows don't seem to produce as solid of a block as an agar grow, so I wouldn't recommend it if you do spores to grain. I just mist after harvesting. If you’re lucky, you’ll get three or more good flushes out of your grow. Once your substrate blocks stops producing shrooms or gets moldy, it's time to say goodbye to it, thank it for its service, and toss it in the trash. Make sure to clean your equipment well after you're done to prevent mold growth and to have it ready for the next time.

Thanks for reading, and good luck!

I don't like the spores to grain part. You should reconsider what you're suggesting newer people do, this could lead to a lot of unnecessary frustration and wasted time for people. It's cool that you made a guide encompassing the things you had to piece together yourself in an attempt to help newbs, but just saying you should reconsider some things. I made the mistake of going syringe to grains the first time I tried bulk because I didn't have as much reading under my belt as I wish I had, ended up with bacterial spawn that I didn't even know was bacterial because I was so new, I'd hate to see that happening to others because of this

There is just to much bad advice here to address point by point. You do not have the experience needed to write a tek.please try again after you get a few dozen/hundred grows under your belt

Yeah, i see you put a lot of effort into this and i commend you for that, but you unfortunately dont have the experience (yet) to be writing teks. Good job on the links you provided, that might be helpful to a newbie, your insertions less so. If you wanted to make this post useful, you could rework it into a link compendium.

Right now i would focus on getting a decent pinset in your grows.

Look, I didn’t write this to be the most comprehensive guide ever. There are a million teks already written, I literally wrote this so I could show my friends what I did. I don’t really care what you guys think, this method works to produce shrooms. I feel like you’re all getting hung up on the agar thing, well you know what? You don’t have to use agar. It’s a pain in the ass for a beginner. This is an easy, imperfect but effective method. As a first timer I didn’t care about achieving a perfect pinset, I just wanted to grow something, which I did. And I’m happy with my results and plan to keep growing this way. Not everyone has to do things the same way.

Updated this guide to eliminate an unnecessary step of inoculating jars in two stages. I'm about to use this method again and wanted to correct this to match what I'll actually be doing.

Still think it's a great way for a beginner to do things, even though all of you guys seem to be agar elitists.

I see all you noobs out there crying in the darkness, cursing agar's complexity and wishing for a simpler way. I, getinmybelly, am only trying to help my fellow noobs. Do not give up noobs, and do not overcomplicate things for yourself. You can do it.

This alone immediately invalidates this as a recommendable, new Tek. It's just not good advice I'm afraid. It shows that you also don't seem to understand why and how agar is used and why spores straight to grain is a bad idea.

It's not about being elitist as you pretend, it's about understanding that spores to grain is likely to contaminate and cutting down on the chances of contamination. You're not helping noobs with this. You're showing that you haven't done your research, don't have much experience, and are ignoring what you've been told by those who do have relevant experience,  it seems because you like to think that you're making things easier, when in reality you aren't. You're also necroing a close to two year old thread that was rightly pointed out as being based on misunderstandings and lack of experience when you originally posted it.

I do get that you genuinely may want to help, but you need to have experience and to have done some solid research and learning under your belt, if you are going to be of genuine help to those who are as new, or newer than you. You seem to have entirely skipped learning and experience. That's not a short cut, it's a mistake.

It seems like everyone on this site has been drinking the agar kool aid. This method works! If it produces the end result you want, how can you say it’s bad? I’ve acknowledged many times in this post that this method objectively isn’t as good as starting with agar and you may have an increased risk of contamination. Knowing that risk, I still choose this method for myself because it’s easier.

Noobs, give it a try. If it doesn’t work, don’t listen to me. If it does, then great.

That’s all I have to say about this, and I won’t keep posting replies just to repeat myself.

Hey all, just wanted to update this thread with some pics of a recent, much more successful spores to grain grow. I've updated the original post with all sorts of disclaimers advocating the benefits of agar, and also these pics.

I fully acknowledge that agar is better in every way, but I think these results show that spores to grain does work, and that you can do it with very little risk of contamination if you get your syringe from a good source (definitely don't prepare it yourself if you are trying to use this method).

I didn't have a single bit of contamination this go around, didn't use an SAB, and still got exactly the results I was looking for. Yes, you probably get fewer shrooms, they may be smaller, not as full of a tub, more mutants, etc. with spores to grain, but for a noob such as myself that wants to do this as lazily as possible, I'm happy with these results.

I don't want to be an enemy of the talented individuals on this site. I simply want to show that there is validity in spores to grain, keeping in mind that agar will produce better results. If anything I hope these pics are interesting for anyone wondering what a spores to grain grow looks like.

All the best, and good luck to all of you.

That, as a way of doing things, spores to grain can work is not in dispute. That it's more often an inefficient and poor practice in comparison to others that work better, are not as prone to contamination and such, is also not in dispute.
That's kind of the point and you seem to be missing that for some reason. Nobody's going to tell you that you can only grow one way, but they will call out recommending poor practice such as spores straight to grain,
which by it's nature is more prone to contamination no matter where someone gets their spore syringes from. Syringes are good when used for PF Tek and for putting to agar to get clean mycelium. They're not so good as a primary
method for inoculation much of the time. It's not complicated. I'm glad you managed to grow some mushrooms.

The thing is, I completely agree with you. I get all the arguments against spores to grain but it's worked for me to achieve the standards that I, a lazy noob, am happy with, and I'd rather not get into agar just yet, but one day I should.

I can agree with you while it’s not a great idea it can work. I just got all the stuff to make some plates. I’m starting my 2nd round of treasure coast and  tidal wave s2g but I’m going to be starting my PE to agar hopefully next week and plan to go from there to lc to grain. After doing a ton of research agar really isn’t that scary and since I had most of the equipment I spent maybe 50$ on what I needed to get setup with it.

When you do start agar, you'll kick yourself. If you can mix powder with water in a pot, you can make agar. It's not hard, expensive, or time consuming. In fact just the opposite.

Nice. I really should do this next time and I probably will. I took some prints last time that I’d like to try using with agar.

You’re right, you really are. It’s just that one extra step that seemed too difficult at the start but now that I’m comfortable with the process, introducing agar won’t be hard. I still think this guide is a good reference for a beginner starting with agar or spores to grain, mainly as a consolidation of links, and with the added disclaimers, the noobs out there can make their own decisions.

Yeah it’s pretty cool haha. One of the benefits of doing spores to grain, you get funny mutants like that
