I think perhaps they could absorb imprints of the consciousness of others though. We are constantly shedding physical parts of ourselves, and some form of consciousness, of life is within the cells we shed... I think perhaps the things around us collect parts of us. Parts that make us alive and sentient. And some part of us senses this.
We affect the consciousness of everything around us, by the simple fact of being here. When I toss my keys on the table, I am doing that. I cause a chain of reaction through spacetime as air molecules move out of the way of the keys I've just tossed. The small - but very real - damages to both the tabletop and my keys they make as they crash into each other. Even the infrared radiation given off by my keys as they slowly cool to room temperature has a very real and measurable effect on the surroundings.
I caused all that to happen. It's as if I took a small part of my consciousness and tossed it out into the world, to create all those effects even after I have walked out of the room.

I have no idea if all matter equals consciousness, but that for anything physical, even at the atomic level to exist, gives potential for everything don't it?

As I was tripping last night I could just feel the harmony of the universe. You can see the electric waves that powers the universe, electromagnetism/waves that put together the universe. It's incredible. All forms of life have consciousness in some kind of way. Maybe not conscious how we define it... but how can we define things that we simply do not understand?
-------------------- Lead by example, words mean little when your actions don't reflect what you say. Spread kindness, love, empathy, compassion. Learn from mistakes. Try and do better. Each day is a new day, try to make it a better one. Coconut and Avocado is awesome for the skin. MIND OVER MATTER

I've seen gravity waves while on acid. I've seen the universe as a torus while on mushrooms.
According to quantum physics and the theory of relativity, everything is interconnected and has an influence on everything else.
Human consciousness is completely different from the consciousness of "non-living" beings and entities.
Look at this short clip on plant consciousness:

This is accurate to a point. This only applies to the observable universe. The part of the universe that is receding faster than the speed of light is beyond the influence of our local environment. We are also not influenced by events that occur inside the event horizon of a black hole
