Symbiosis between Elk and Cantharellus
    #27526941 - 11/01/21 10:00 PM (2 years, 6 months ago)

Chanterelles are highly edible (so delicious!) and I've found nibble marks and whole mushrooms eaten in elk and bear habitat. While walking around the woods I've been wondering whether its possible that ungulates like elk and deer are in a symbiosis and that without ungulates mycelial populations would be affected. Maybe this could affect gene flow, evolution and migration of mushroom species in the long term?

An observation I've made in the field that really stood out is chanterelle patches lining the downhill side of Elk trails. Is it possible that hooves disturbing the forest floor could facilitate transport of spores to the roots of possible mycorrhizal partners?

Hope this is the right forum, seems like mycology/ecology to me.

This shroom is symbiotic with tree and edible for a lot of animals

The droppings of deer, wild boars etc. as well as slugs seed forests with fungal spores including symbiotics

I have seen many mushroom with deer tooth marks on them. Boletus spp., xerocomus spp. and hypholoma sublateritium for example. I have also seen whole bouquets of hypholoma fasciculare with all their caps eaten off. Apparently deer like sulfur caps.

Boar tend to dig deep and eat the whole mycelium(?), but i have no idea what kind of mushroom. Most probably sclerotia or truffle producing species i guess. I have never seen evidence of boar eating fruiting bodies that are over ground. Even in places where there were plenty of tasty big fruiting bodies the boar only dug next to them. In one place where i knew they slept, they wouldn´t touch any of the amanitas, boletus, xerocomus, lactarius or anything.

I have walked up upon a deer laying down tripping balls from eating amanita‘s
Squirrels also love the amanita for the effects on them
