Feed Spores to Cows?
    #384788 - 09/03/01 05:02 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

Hey I am just wandering... Is it possible to feed spores to cows and then shrooms grow in its shit? I am really interested in whether this would work.

do shrooms grow on old shit or only fresh?

nope.their stomach acid would destroy them instantly, also considering that it the temp is in the 90s inside a cow

Maybe I read it here but I'm pretty sure I read it in one of stamets books that the cow eats the spores on the grass, the spores germinate inside the cow and when it poops it is partially colonised.

shroom spores to grass to cow to tummy to poop to shrooms

not shroom spores to poop to shroom

But I could be wrong; thats just what I read.

Tom's right. Cows have a very weak digestive system thats why when they take a shit you can still see whole grass blades in it. When the mushrooms sporulates it drops its spores on the grass, the cow eats the grass, the cow releases the spores back into the environment within an extremely nutrient rich substrate, the spore germinates within the substrate (the best place to be) when it reaches the outside of the substrate it forms a fruiting body, releases spores, and the cycle continues. The same thing happens with most fruit (especially berries) seeds in the wild.

God that was hard to just not say poo poo during all that.

I think Tom is right. I remember being told that spores germinate in the cow.

I think that your right. The cow's stomachs (I belive that they have two) do NOT kill spores and thats a major reason why shrooms end up where they do...... So I guess that it would go to reason that feeding cows spores WOULD work... eh?

Cows actually have one stomach just it has 4 sections and since its in sections, thats what causes there weak digestion system, and like almost everyone said the spores do travel thru the cows stomach without being digested, but i still wouldnt feed a print to a cow and expect shrooms anytime soon or at all possiably

i think it was mjshroomer that said either him or someone else fed some cows at a farm spore prints repeatedly till they got fruits but the mushrooms did not return the following year..

How about spore water in a squirt gun.

Then walk around the cow field squirting the cow pies.

I raise grass-fed beef, and the steers are killed on the farm. Their stomach contents are left behind by the butchers, and these piles of fermenting grass always grow a bunch of small mushrooms. I have never tried to ID them, but I will give it a try next spring.

I didn't notice the date, but was interested in what was being said about cow stomachs and mushrooms. I just wanted to point out that it looks like fungus in one form another appears to be present in cattle stomachs. I was hoping someone would see my post and share their thoughts.

Collect some samples and grow them out. If you get something active then share the spores with the community.

I wouldn't say they have weak digestive systems considering that they can actually process cellulose and turn it into amino acids and humans can't. Think about it: cows get jacked and all they do is eat grass whereas we have to eat loads of protein to get jacked.
