Could a mushroom survive cooking?
    #27524630 - 10/30/21 08:49 PM (2 years, 6 months ago)

I swear that fruitbodies that I boil and subsequently use in composting projects are still infective. I think I've seen mycelium coming from a sclerotia I threw in the yard that had been made into tea - if it was alive, it survived boiling water in a french press.

Sclerotia are a special case. Would a regular fruitbody survive any amount of boiling and still produce viable mycelium on a culture plate?

If such a thing hasn't been tested I'll do an experiment. I'll try to clone specimens after various amounts of boiling.

You would need to boil it long enough for the center to reach over 170F so easily Longer than it takes to make coffee.

Also boiling water cools down a lot going into a french press. Removing the heat source from the water and mixing it with room temperature glass metal and coffee grounds.

once put a piece of some mushroom that looked like turkey tail in my electric PC for 26 minutes because I didn't have any agar left and the store was out. I left it for 2 weeks wheni looked at it I didn't know what The hell was on the Pasty Plate so I opened it and realized it was the mushroom that was growing all through the agar.
Another time I took a clone of pe it got bacteria so I threw it back in the electric PC for 27 minutes because there was extra room. Came back month later and saw it was  covered in myc so I put it in the fridge.

The temperature that mycelium can survive depends on how long it has reached that temperature, however I don't think anything boiled will still be alive other than a few contaminant spores.
