Got the cacti my old lady ordered today. The tag says it is a penis cactus. Looks pretty healthy. Might have some roots already. Stabbed the shit out of my hand. Thought I had removed all the spines from the paper it was wrapped up in.
I'll post pics when I can find my camera charger.

You may want to use 50% pumice in a very humid area.  Fabric pots can be lifesavers too if you get lots of rain.

when growing bridgesii outdoors, do you have to shade them? will they burn in direct sun?

It depends on the climate that you're in.  They can take full sun with no problem unless you're in a very hot climate.  In the northeast USA they should be fine in full sun except for the very hottest days.  On really hot days they will benefit from some afternoon shade.

But in a hot climate like Florida or Las Vegas they will benefit from having some afternoon shade throughout the growing season.

Too much sun during really hot weather will stress them and cause yellowing.  The growth will slow down.  Extra water can help them to better handle the heat.  But you still have to be careful not to over do it and cause rot.

Its just a matter of experimenting and finding what works best for your location and climate.  The best spot for your cacti may change with the changing of the seasons from spring to summer to fall.  And there are microclimates at most locations that are hotter or cooler than the surroundings.

great info thanks, so for example i have a well draining mix and a container that drains, and just bring them inside when its planned to rain, and move them in before it freezes out? thanks for your time

Hopefully some folks with experience growing in containers in a cold climate will chime in and answer that for you.  I'm in the desert and all my cacti grow in the ground.

But yeah I think that would work.  Keep in mind that every year when you first bring them outdoors you will have to gradually introduce them to full sun or they could get sunburned.  Also I'm not sure that you would have to protect them from the rain unless it is a heavy downpour.  But maybe others can let you know what works for them.

ok, makes sense, you can grow cactus pretty much anywhere with this method, maybe not antarctica

Reading this thread got me interested in cacti, I ordered some Bridgesii seeds from a sponsor on here. Nothing to add but thanks for introducing me to the cacti. I'm excited!

I grow cactus in a zone 4b/5a in containers. A lot of my collection is bridgesii. I will say having  greenhouse space makes things so much easier, but I know not everyone has the space or whatever for that.

Well draining mix for my containers, I usually use recycled cannabis soil or something like that with extra perlite or lava rock thrown in it.

If you have tons of rain, you probably don't want them out in it all the time. If they can dry out some between rains it's probably ok. Some clones are more prone to issues from humidity than others. Overall, trichs don't like cold and wet. They can handle occasional temps down into the 20s and 30s ok if the soil is dry enough. I've pushed mine down into the teens a few times in fall...one of those times was not ok because wind came in and I lost some cactus(was able to still save most of their spirits, just not their bodies;)), but the other times have been ok. My greenhouse does add a little warmth, but it's not heated and a little drafty in there.

Like fox said, the trick is acclimating them back into the sun after their winter rest without sunburning them. I started putting weed fabric as heavy shade cloth on the greenhouse to ease them back into it in spring for a couple weeks. Before I had greenhouse space for my trichs, I would find them a spot with a good amount of shade to get them going, then gradually move them into a little more sun. Like with humidity, some clones are way more prone to sunburn than others.

Questions incoming.

What do you feed them?

2. I have a rooted bridgesii I received in the mail. Should I wait to repot?

3. Have a cutting also. I thought it had roots, false alarm. Instructions say to root it in soil. I've seen many post that they root in an empty pot. Is one method better for some reason?

Say No To Hard Water

Since cacti are very sensitive to minerals, watering them with soft water can speed up the growing process. Minerals from hard water can build up in the soil and can reach dangerously high levels. This obstructs the development of cacti and can possibly result in root death.

Rainwater, bottled water, and distilled water are the best options for watering cactus.

My tap has pretty low ppm. Might have to get some yucca powder though, even putting the pot into standing water the dirt ball didn't want to take any moisture.

I have a fancy contraption for catching and storing up to 350 gal of rain water. It gets stinky pretty fast. I use it on outside plants that stay outside.
'sides that, tap is pretty cheap, I can afford to share a few ounces now and then.

I never heard this before. Cacti do grow in the ground, and groundwater tends to be hard. Also, I always water my cacti with tap water first, then I walk down to my crick and fill up a couple containers of crick water, which I'm pretty sure is considered hard, and they grow pretty fast.

Anyways, I'm zone 6 and leave my cacti out in pots, full sun from around April to October/November ish. I also normally rotate my cacti 90 degrees at around 12:20.
