I've been reading the trich grower unity thread for clues. Made it to page 50 and ran out of steam. What is consensus currently on growing medium?

Good looking cactus grey fox.

Depending on your climate, but Fox Farms Ocean Forest mixed 2:1 with pumice should work well for many.  You can add more pumice if you are in a wet area.

I want to share a link to a recent post on another forum by Keeper Trout.  He is a highly respected authority on San Pedro and Peyote.

Here is the link:

https://www.dmt-nexus.me/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1150160#post1150160

Here is the text of the post:

"Just a thought echoing what was already said. If a person took 200 grams of something that was 1% their dosage level would be 2 grams. If it was 2% double that, etcetera. Some of the bridgesii strains are coming back in the range of several percent or so, so adverse perceptions of bridgesii are likely due to unanticipatedly high dosages. Pachanoi and peruvianus often have other molecules like 3-methoxytyramine or DMPEA that competitively interfere with mescaline binding to receptors so are perceived of in a lighter way whereas so far only mescaline is being observed in bridgesii. An analytical project is underway as this is being written so eventually a lot more resolution will be available. Mescaline is a beautiful experience at an appropriate level but a really high dose is challenging and uncomfortable."

There is a lot of important info in this post.

First of all, he addresses the fact that in current, ongoing scientific research it is becoming clear that Bridgesii contains very high levels of mescaline.  Some clones of Bridgesii have levels of mescaline that are on par with peyote.

Second of all, in that ongoing research it is also becoming clear that there are additional chemicals in Pachanoi and Peruvianus that appear to interfere with mescaline's ability to bind with receptor sites in the brain.  In other words, it appears that with Pachanoi and Peruvianus additional molecules are reducing the perceived effects of the mescaline.  Interestingly, Bridgesii is not being found to have those additional molecules, and therefore more of the mescaline in Bridgesii would be available to bind with receptor sites in the brain compared to Pachanoi and Peruvianus.

This second point is fascinating because for many years people have been thinking that there must be additional chemicals in Bridgesii which are boosting its potency.  How ironic that it might actually be additional chemicals in Pachanoi and Peruvianus that are making those species feel less potent than Bridgesii!

However, much more cientific research into the psychoactivity of Trichocereus cacti is still needed.  There is still so much more to be learned.  I'm really looking forward to hearing more about the new research that is coming to light now.  I'll try to share more here in this thread about new research that is being released as I learn about it.

And so, there was also a recent article in the PhytoChem and BioSub Journal in which it was discovered that mescaline concentrations in Trichocereus cacti appear to be greatest higher up on the the column, and gradually decrease from there the farther down on the column that was tested.  In other words, the top of the column contains more mescaline than the middle of the column.  And the middle of the column contains more mescaline than the bottom of the column.  And there are other interesting details in the article as well, but it is very dense reading.  Here is the link:

Whoa! Fantastic info there thanks for sharing and yes please keep updating as you find more. I look forward to hearing more results from him.

Very ironic and interesting! What a twist… Didn’t consider that.
More reason to love Bridgesii

Good to know about the tips… another switch for me. I always assumed older, lower growth would be stronger. Nice!

I’ve seen this posted around a few times, what’s the allure of grafting to pereskiopsis?

From my understanding you can do stuff like this in one years time.

I live in a very humid environment in the summer, coastal NY 7a, how would you say this would affect my potting mix?

That’s fucking wild.
That’s what it was, I’ve seen pictures of this a few times with peyote.

Side note: pereskiopsis has glochids, which are a fucking nightmare.
I learned real quick while harvesting the tunas of my (only) native Opuntia humifusa to avoid them at all costs.
I found a throw away tee shirt to work almost flawlessly at removing them.
Ugh!
