FSHuntings said: I have a question for everyone here. We know P. caerulescens likes woody debris after an area has been graded or a landslide has occurred but does not grow on mulch. Alan R. has found them around an old saw mill by the hundreds of pounds and northgahunt has found them in the bucket loads by areas effected by pine beetles.
Why do you think caerulescens likes landslides? What exactly triggers this fungi to fruit after this has occurred? I want to do some tests and need your thoughts/theory on why they fruit in these conditions and not in untilled soil.
Here's my armchair theory:
"Disturbing" ground helps push pine needles and other caerulescens food underground and into reach. It also loosens up the soil. I can tell for a fact that in the neighborhood building process, pine forests are priority areas for takedown, since their trunks are much thinner than the other types of trees around them, thus less work to bring down. It's expected that the construction machines have pushed lots of that pine material underground just by running over it.
We recently had an excavation job done in our side-yard 6-8 months ago. The plot for our house was made in the 90's, so its been a long time. Roughly 4ft of clay dug was away. The clay at this level is very very dense. It takes much much longer for water to drain in this area, despite being in the sun. Im sure its a very similar effect for clay soil that hasnt been tilled in many years. It becomes too dense for caerulescens.
I also agree with HumbleHunt's comment. When clay is that dense, I dont think it gets enough oxygen to fruit anything.

Nice patch you got there Blue.
The end of the season is near, but the time to find massive clusters of caerulescens is upon us fellow Georgians

Sweet! As a newbie, with some success this year, I've mostly been focusing and finding caerulescens in grassy sloped areas near newer neighborhoods and newer grass, should I remain focused in wood chipped areas for ovoids? Sorry, I know this is not an ID thread, but I'll post some pics tonight of my latest score this morning.

First picture is freshly picked and the other is a few hours later after someone took a bite. Haha
The color change is intense. The stipe going completely blue and the cap going silver.

think i was a little too early after the rain all that was there was this green molded fellow
did also find this cool little guy
i think i saw some footprints and what looked like some digging of mycelium at a spot i frequent...*sniffle...*tear

Yeah, I went back about 2weeks ago and covered them, but totally forgot water to give them a boost. Came back in 5-7 days and they had aborted so I left them. The spot has been torn apart from grading, so I was letting it recoup after I took some active myc. From another area not effected by grading. That’s why I said something, because 6 said it looked like someone had been there and had taken some myc. Haha. I took a pic of the aborts, but can’t find it now. The aborted pic looks really similar. I wish I could find it. Its a hard spot to check all the time since it’s a little haul for me, but I have been watering it and feeding...basically babying it since last year.
