When to introduce light?
    #2751384 - 05/31/04 10:22 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I am so sorry, but if someone has time to answer this question, I will love you forever. I have been searching but just don't have anymore time tonight. Can someone tell me when to introduce light to a casing? A foaf has just a few hyphal knots forming and is wondering if she ought to introduce light now.  Also, is it OK to introduce light right after casing?  She is so confused. Thank you so much for any help!

after casing, cover with tin foil and let sit in the incubator again until you see an even layer of white peeking throught the casing layer on top. Then, throw the sucker in the fruiting chamber and shine the light, keep the air fresh, and humid.

K- so what if there is no more room in the incubator since it is cased? What if my foaf put the cases in the terrarium but covered the terrarium with a towell so that light couldn't get in? Do you think that is ok? Sorry for all the dumb questions. Oh, and thanks Domey and Trippysmurf, you have been very helpful!

He's right... it'll work - you'll get growth, but it won't be ideal.

K- Thank you, and one more question- her incubator is a rubbermaid (full of jars)wrapped in a towel with a heating pad on top. It is about 86-88 degrees F in there normally. Do you think she ought to take the cases out of the terrarium, wrap them in a towel, and put them on top of the heating pad that is over the incubator?

It could work. You want to make sure it can breathe a little though - which should be fine through the towel. I'd recommend sticking a thermometer in the towel to monitor the temperature. Being ontop of the heating pad COULD make it a little too warm. 88 degrees is already slightly high. Best to keep it slightly under 86 opposed to slightly over, but it'll still be good.

Another idea, what do you think- she could get another heating pad, keep the cases in the terrarium, and put the heating pad on top of the terrarium to keep it warm! It is getting warm where she lives besides....

Absolutely. You just want to maintain it at around 86 degrees, with high humidity (90's) and very little air exchange (but not air tight)... if you cover it with tin foil, you'll be fine... just don't put an airtight lid on the container. Also keep it dark. As long as these requirements are met, you'll be in good shape.

if you have knots you've already passed the light stage...but don't worry about it..indirect sunlight or the light in a room for a few seconds is all it takes...so basically if your checking on your stuff at all then its getting enough light
