Folks, the season is upon us.  Happy Hunting!

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.

San Francisco, growing in wood chips

Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.

mostly dark purple

Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

white stem, staining blue

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.

wavy, stained completely blue/purple

Spore print color:
Very important!

Not yet, but presuming purple

Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.

appears to bruise blue

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

First find, they're super soggy and dark purple so I think I have cyans here, but of course, I'm no expert.

They don't really seem rotten,  just very wet.  Still, happy to find them so quickly.  I left some there, so I could still get fresher specimens soon.

Seems I've got the first posted find this season in the SF Bay area!

I was able to get a weak spore print from a couple of these, purple as expected but mostly they had already given up their spores as evidenced by the intense blueing.  I really wasn't prepared to find these, just shoved them in my pocket and I didn't spend much time there in my excitement. I'm sure there are more so I'm going back this morning.  Hopefully there are some that aren't so mature.

The intense, near-black, bluing is the sign of frost, usually, they can have not dropped spore #1 and look dark like that.

I agree with Renegade.
Strange looking phenotype more upturned than wavy. Were they found in an area with a lot of fog drip, or irrigated?

Usually the allenii come out first.
I checked a few known spots yesterday but nothing yet, figured we still need temps to drop, but apparently not the case.

Nice finds the season is kicking off!

went back, got more.  Not irrigated so very surprised to see these, but there probably almost certainly was fog drip as it's fairly close to the ocean.  Lots of L. Ceres out there right now.  There are some pins, I expect I'll be back at the location in a few days and hopefully then get more/better pics of fresher specimens.

When I found these, I had been looking for about an hour, didn't see anything.  Then I got to this spot, still didn't see anything but I was strangely drawn to it (call of the mushrooms?) so I went in for a closer look.  Immediately saw some Leratiomyces ceres and then I just looked a couple feet over, and there they were.  There was never really any doubt about what they were (Psilocybe species), surprised it was that obvious.

Best advice I gleaned from this forum?  Hunt the habitat, not the mushroom.

Should I start the 2021 bay area season thread?

Well first find of the year happened to be an ID request lol

Doesn’t matter to me, just nice to have a common thread to see all the finds in one place.

I guess also looking back it could be California wide not just Bay Area but whatever MH&I crew calls for…

It's all good, congrats on kicking off the season!

I checked my patches yesterday and there was no sign of life.  I'm probably going to give it another couple weeks before looking again.

There's a forecast for 3-5 inches of rain tomorrow where I am, and at least an inch across the entire bay area.

I had the first pins in my cultivated buckets north of SF several days ago but they havnt fully formed yet. I got about 18 inches of rain. Near Mount Tam. I also found the first fruit of the season in SF 1 week ago. It was cyanescens. Right near the ocean.

Maybe you can guess how stupid I felt ripping those pins out while transplanting a new bucket. One of them is still growing.

Not quite the Bay Area, but NorCal. Allenii are popping off. Went to check my spots and found quite a few mature specimens and tons of pins. This year I only harvested the biggest ones and left all the smaller ones and pins to mature.

You all inspired me to check my patches most had nada but one well know SF spot had lots of pins and a few maturing!
I left most but couldn’t resist grabbing a few.

Wondering around I found some stragglers on the edge of a picnic area.

Def still early but that Oct rain got me excited.

I don’t understand how you guys are finding anything. I’ve gone on a couple hunts in some spots in the mountains near skyline as well as in the town of Woodside (where I live) that I know have produced before and they’ve been completely dry. I am still fairly inexperienced so I was wondering if I am missing something? Because of the rain I’ve been looking, but recently I have struggled to find any mushrooms whatsoever to be honest. is that just because it’s fairly early in the season? Does it need to be exclusively coniferous areas? I would really like any tips.

It helps when the temps are a bit lower than they are now and the patch is irrigated. It's likely the patches that have been producing were really well irrigated all year.

:whathesaid: All my favorite spots have nothing.
We need the temps to drop and hopefully get more rain too.

My finds yesterday were in well irrigated and shady areas they were also well beyond the fog line. Seems that anywhere that gets significant afternoon sun is a no go at this point.

I think I'm going to take some strolls through Golden Gate Park now that I live super close, and see what I can find. I spotted a nice patch of redlead roundheads yesterday, one of my favorite non-active mushrooms.

If anyone else lives nearby and just wants to poke around the park with me talking about shroomery stuff, send me a PM. I don't really need to forage cyans, to be honest, as I've got bags of homegrown stuff on hand, but it's fun to chat about this stuff with people who understand the appeal, and I just like seeing them in their natural environment.

Only a few of my patches have shown growth so far. Irrigation and shaded micro-climates are key until we get more rain and lower temps. Woodchip planters that border along lawns usually catch some overspray from sprinklers. Good luck out there!

There's something about the domed cap that makes them more appealing than cyans (to me).

Well I drove around a bit tadday even tho it's clearly way too warm yet here in the central valley.
I knew I won't find much but at the same time I don't like to miss flushes either - because much
more people are out now hunting than even a few years ago. There is a patch I know for a couple of years
that flushes a few weeks before the rest of them. (microclimate - I guess)
It always produces a handful of tiny little guys and last year I caught them at the same stage as today:

Last year I left them there thinking "let them grow bigger". I looked again 3 days later, and the whole patch
was cleared by someone else. I left them there today as well.

WOW look at that first picture, I can't believe such a fruiting body is coming out of such little mycelium.  That's insane!

I transplanted a patch last year into my backyard, but it was sooo god damn dry this summer I don't know if I watered it enough, generally I watered it once a week, but sometimes I was away from home and it went maybe 2 weeks or so without getting watered.  I hope to see some fruits this year, mostly just because I want them to drop spores so they keep producing year after year.  I already have a spot I know I can get fresh ones, and I only need them for microdosing, so I don't need much at all.

It's been raining here, but it hasn't gotten that cold yet at all.  Hopefully it's a fruitful season!

Also amazing finds everyone, bravo.

Hey yall, just checked the patch that I had growing from last year from transplanted p. alleni woodchips/mycelium.  Looks like after these recent rain storms things really have started kicking off great!  I can see the mycelium is starting to explode and grow everywhere, as well as these little white fuzzy areas are starting to pop up.. I've never cultivated an outdoor patch before, so I don't know what the growth stages are supposed to look like.  But it seems that the mycelium is starting to aggressively grow right now and some little areas look like they are about to sprout fruits hopefully!  One can only hope!

I'll check back in two or three days and see if there are any fruits and see how the mycelium is doing, considering it's the beginning of the season, I think I may get some good fruits this year!

One question, does this look like p. alleni mycelium on the last two?  And the fuzzy bits on the other pictures, are those fruiting bodies about to form or potential cobweb mold?  I spread a ton of active mycelium in this area, sorry Im a total noob at this!

Oh wow just look at that aggressive colonization in the last picture!! Holy macaroni!
Reading your previous post, I was gonna say: You probably did yourself a favor by skipping on the watering in the heat! Allenii, when dormant in the summer, doesn't require any water. Sometimes watering in the heat invites green mold and other fungi that eats up allenii for breakfast. Excited to see your first fruits man! :toast:

Yikes... it definitely stayed pretty dry the entire summer, even when I watered it only the top layer of mulch would get wet, the chips the mycelium was on always stayed dry.  I definitely watered it like 2-3 times a month though.

I definitely hope it goes well!  The mycelium looked like all the pictures I had seen online in terms of stuff I didnt take pictures of.  Fingers crossed, the goal is to get this patch really covered and eventually seed other patches with it.

Thanks for any and all responses!

Oh well that fruit was out of a whole bucket, but you would be amazed that this and the others actually continued growing! Over a week since I pulled it and it's flattening out. I put it in a new bin of chips and there is mycelium like an inch out in all points.

Let me know if it's wrong to discuss this cultivation in this thread. Third photo is the actual mushroom from first post, in a new bin! 4th photo is the bin it camefrom, which has more out the bottom.
Oh and BTW I was putting ice on the bins ever night for a week before the pins, and Temps were 48 degrees at night.

I've gone out hunting and found nothing so far, wondering if this is a bad year for me.

First time out looking this season. Stumbled across a really nice, mature cluster which led to a new spot that produced a great haul. Everything seemed perfectly ready and hadn't been picked over.

Oooo yall are making me think of going to the mother patch I found last year.. maybe I should today.

Quick check on the transplant patch, no fruits yet, but mycelium is exploding everywhere.  Each little place I turn a little casing woodchip up to check on it I stop because mycelium is attached to it, as well I can see the starter chips flourishing and growing onto all the chips around them, and since I know that is alleni mycelium, I have to safely assume it will result in alleni fruits.  A few areas are doing exceedingly well, yet I just don't think it's gotten cold enough where I live (north bay area) for them to start fruiting.  Last year it wasn't until December it got cold enough, and since its been the hottest year on record in CA in 2021, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't start fruiting until Mid to Late December.

But that's whatever, just more time for the mycelium to keep growing, right?  I've also been going through the patch and looking for any green mold, only found a little bit in 2-3 small isolated areas, and used a glove and tossed that shit away!  Gonna have to do that every so often to make sure it isn't an issue, my poor alleni mycelium, I can't fail it!

Other then checking for any bad signs of other mold, I'll only be checking for fruits once a week.  I've noticed some random mushrooms started fruiting on the edge of my patch, not on the woodchips, but close to them.  I was super excited at first seeing the first pin!  But then I was like nope, that's not it... so I tossed the imposters (sorry little guys) because they were growing right next to starter chips that had mycelium spreading around it, no competition here.

fingers crossed - I kinda fucked up this patch by making it to large of sq ft and not quite deep enough, should've done half the square footage and double the depth.  Oh well, lesson learned, but I think I'll get some fruits this year in enough places where if they drop the spores down everywhere or I make a spore slurpie and spread it around, I can add some more chips on top at the end of the season and then next year it'll be perfect.

Hey, I'm happy to hear about your new patch. If everybody made transplant patches there would be no shortage of patches.

Just wanted to let you know that if there is any green mold bits in your patch you don't need to remove them. I don't know if your used to growing cubes, but allenii will just eat that shit up. Unless it is there because the patch has poor air circulation, but if that was the case your allenii would not be doing so well. Generally the mold will just die when the sugars or nutes it is eating wash away or dissipate.
I have some slime mold that colonizes some of my buckets and that is a bigger issue, but in ground patches are basically invincible except to some other mycelium like honey mushrooms.

Left all these guys plus a lot more (actually didn’t harvest any today) hopefully they are there when I return. Last year this spot had huge fruit, judging by the fat stems they are headed that way again!

Nice finds everyone cool to see some big flushes, most my spots are still not showing signs,  but excited that some activities are coming out.

Menlo Park reporting in!

Swung by a few of my known spots today. Things are looking pretty dormant, but did actually find a couple Allenii in one of the spots. It's a spot where they come up through some thin bushes that are on top of chips, so I'm thinking it's holding the moisture close enough for long enough.

Found another and another and another ovoid patch in the central valley.

They are all over the place
I'm visiting my allenii patches and keep finding ovoids.
Maybe it's the early rain coupled with higher temps?

Idk, but just about anywhere I looked today ovoids were on display.
(I did not take pictures of all of the patches)

Nice work CHUCK :yesnod:

I hit yet another central valley town just to see what's up.
Seems like cyans flushed a week or so ago in front of a popular chain restaurant:

I’m always impressed how the Central Valley shows up hard to the party. All the true chip bed I visit are nil so I end up just hanging under the fog drip

Found another two patches of Allenii fruiting in Northern Sonoma County. One from last year and a totally new one. Chips are still really dry even though we’ve had a decent amount of rain, but they’re out there. I have a feeling when the temps drop and we get more rain🤞the Cyan patches will start to pop.

On a side note: does anyone have any advice for hunting the humbolt dunes/ coast. I’m hoping to have better luck finding Cyans there right now. Has anyone ever found Azzies that far south?? TIA

Can anyone find the lone Cyanescens??👆 hint: it’s on the right side

:lol:ZenZone ovoid slayer

Edit: don’t get me wrong this is tight! Just reveling in our early rain. I feel like the last time I remember a storm like that was back in 1998 we should all look for obscure fungus

Great finds everyone! Ovoids have always eluded me, nice work ZenZone. Most patches still haven't shown growth for me, but those that fruited have been very productive. Here's some Allenii and Cyans from last weekend. Happy hunting.

That would be enough to last till next fall or the year after

We in the valley finally got some lower temps, hopefully that will translate to allenii pinning

Happy hunting

Just saw/checked out this annual actives thread for the first time this season.

And dang ZZ, you're finding all sorts already.

I haven't done much looking around yet, but everywhere I have looked around so far has been pretty dry still it seems, I'm not seeing anything. Even at the few spots I know have a patch I'm not seeing anything popping up yet.

I actually haven't seen a single mushroom of any sort at all yet this season in any spot I've looked around, active or not. Nada.

Crazy to see you finding that many already. And cool that you came across some ovoids .

Nice finds everyone ...Should be a good season. It has been a while since we've had this much moisture and cool air in place this early in the season.

Last year it was still in the 80s & lower 90s during late Oct/early Nov around my area...And I don't think the first real rains came until sometime in December.

Hi there, new to the forum! Would anyone be interested in looking in Golden Gate Park in SF with me this Thursday (Veteran’s Day holiday)? Or other local spots - I’m open. I am still pretty new to mycology but I have been casually learning and looking for the past few years. I also do spore prints if I can. Found some neat mushrooms this weekend and it’s raining a lot here yesterday and today, so I imagine there will be some fun finds!

I am open to just finding someone interested in mycology in general. I had seen someone else had mentioned something similar so I thought it was allowed, but that’s on me if not and will delete if that’s what I should do. Like I said I’m a novice and honestly am looking for someone who likes talking about this stuff and could give guidance. Doesn’t need to be about any specific mushrooms.

Greenapple,
No worries. Yes you are breaking the rules by asking for hunting partners. It’s just a safety thing. After a certain amount of posts and time on the shrooomery the ‘gathering’ forum will be unlocked and you can ask to meet up on there.

Also this thread is only for psychoactive mushrooms. No ID request either.

You should join your local Mycological society if you are in SF this is a good one.https://www.mssf.org/

Welcome to the shroomery

Man I want to get out there and do some hunting, but I'm starting to feel kinda burnt out on "hunting" for them this time around.

Or rather I'm more burnt out on the town/area I live & the masses of people, tired of being in urban/city areas in general, being around a bunch of people and the hectic and chaotic and busy vibes of being in "civilization"...I just don't like being out & about around the city, I hate being around it all so much I don't even want to go out on a hunt anymore.

Too bad these woodlovers don't grow in "natural" habitats outside of the urban areas (at least in the valley, I know cyans and azures can be found in natural dune habitats on the coast up north). I'd much rather take a stroll through the woods than riding a bike in circles in parking lots and shopping centers in a town that I can't stand being in.

It can be exciting finding a new patch, no doubt, especially if one find a big healthy patch with a large flush (I'll never forgot the first patch I found and how massive of it was)...but at this point I mostly just want to have a patch at home that supplies me enough to last me through the year, I am kinda starting to feel that I'm done hunting for them but I will still keep an eye out when ever I am out & about.

I fail at cultivating them though lol...I've tried starting a patch of my own, using stem butts and colonized woodchips and colonized cardboard, every single year for the past 6 or 7 years now and it fails every time. When ever I move up to the Humboldt area I feel I'll have better luck up there having my own personal patch at home, since it's pretty wet and cool in that area most of the year (way better climate for fungi compared to the desert that is the central valley).

Right on!

That sounds similar to the first patch I ever found, def got at least 1/4lb dry my first haul and there was more to be picked.

And posts like that, and seeing y'all already out there finding em', does make me want to get out there and take a look. Especially considering the weather this time around...I've been meaning to ride my bike more now that it is cooler out anyway, and my jars of "dry goods" are running low lol.

I know I should get out there.

that sounds great! I just found a huge haul of oyster mushrooms near Occidental on the weekend.

Today, I got a handful of more allenii from the spot i posted about a few pages ago, but nothing from any of my other patches.

Dehydrating the allenii now. Is there an optimal time for leaving them in?

Hi all,

I’m new here. This is my first season having just moved to SF from Europe in August. I have some experience growing cubes, but I was super psyched to get hunting out here for wood lovers.

Thanks to this amazing community I learned so much about them and I think I just found my first actives .

These first ones I’m pretty certain are Allenii or Ovoids. Found hiding under a bush in woodchips next to an apartment building. They have thin strong (almost woody) stipes and were difficult to pinch and they have slightly smaller domed caps. But they bruise blue and have a purple spore print!

I’m pretty sure these ones are not active… but they really looked the real deal when I picked them. They were in irrigated woodchips next to the dog park I take my dog to. They have thicker white stipes, we’re very easy to pick and have a more brown/orange spore print.

(Hopefully these upload correctly…)

Finally I want to say… having devoured the past 15 years’ worth of archives of the California actives thread in the past three months… I really didn’t think it would be so hard to find these magical little beauties.

I must have checked 100 patches of irrigated wood chips over the past month including three days spent walking through golden gate park.. can anyone confirm if it’s too early for them to be coming up in GGP? I’ve scouted some perfect habitat there and am genuinely surprised not to have found any there!

Thanks!

Ernest

ErnestBecker welcome to the shroomery and the Bay Area!

It’s really hard to ID dried mushrooms especially on foil. (This thread is actives only no ID requests) In the future try and take some institu pics and details shots in natural light and make an ID request post.  You might consider doing that anyway to get more opinions on these finds. I think you are correct pic one is allenii but I’m not 100% because of the poor quality pics

New hunters will often get frustrated because the illusion on the ‘actives only’ threads is that they grow in every seemingly perfect habitat, this is not the case. It takes a lot of time, good luck and good timing to find them.  However it is still early most my GGP spots have not started fruiting yet.

It’s interesting to see how the different spots (all within 1/4 mile) produce different allenii. There’s one spot that produces huge flushes of really small ones, and there’s other spots that produce good flushes of allenii with a caps almost as wide as my hand. This year is gonna be a good one with all this early rain.

Still having no luck finding any other patches so I decided to return to the one patch I have found. I took my time looking around and lifted up all of the shrubs and found a few more Allenii hiding completely out of sight.

Are they normally buried so deeply under bushes? If so I might need to go back to some of the spots I’ve already looked and

They really are beautiful, so worth all of the time and effort to find!

I took some mycelium as well to try and propagate to the other wood chip habitats I’ve scouted! Mushroom hunting has been such a good way to get to see a new city!

Storing with desiccant is definitely the best way to keep mushrooms long term!

I bought a bag of “rechargeable” silica gel packets for $10 off Amazon years ago and I’ve stored cracker dry mushrooms in an airtight container for two years with five or six packets and they have been just as potent (if not more potent)…

You’re definitely going to want to look underneath shrubs and ground cover. They love growing up into plants like that. When I find a spot where they’re growing, I lift up all low hanging branches and ground cover. A lot of times, you might just see a few mushrooms, but once you really take the time to thoroughly look around and underneath, you’ll find many more.

Did you get on iNaturalist app or mushroom observer website and look in your area for known spots? That’s how I found my first patch. It was about half mile to a mile away from one of the locations I saw on iNaturalist. I’d find some spots close to me, and look around those areas where they’re known to be. I’m sure it’s a little harder in the Bay Area since theirs a lot more people hunting, but it’s worth a try.

I went out again yesterday from 9-5. I scouted all my spots and came up with a decent amount. Then, on the way back to my truck, I decided to scout spots where I didn’t find any mushrooms last year and had neglected to look this year. I hit the mother load. I didn’t take too many pictures but here’s a few.

It was crazy and unexpected. Last year I scoured this place with a fine tooth comb, so this year I only looked where I had found them previously. I noticed one spot that previously had nothing, that was popping off this year, so I decided to look more carefully all over. I found two separate spots like the last picture (only 1/4 of the mushrooms are visible in the pic) that had so many massive fruits. By the time I was done collecting them, my hands were literally damn near purple/black because of all the spores. It was a good year. May the mushroom find all of you hunters this season.

I believe I may have found Pannaleous Cinctulis, which would be my first find ever. It looks blue in the gills. And that terribly done spore print is only 20 minutes old. Have some spores under a glass for a longer time print.

Concord, CA. 11/13/21. Psilocybe Allenii. New patch.

Too far gone for me but happily stumbled upon these walking the dog. Funny how you find them not even hunting.

Officially on the board. It’s going to be a great season.

Found a new spot.  I think I’ve barely touched the surface of what’s actually there as I didn’t linger.  Gonna go back in a few and look some more.  Psilocybe cyanescens.

Well my first 10 mins of hunting this year has been successful. I happened to be at a spot in Santa Rosa where I found a few patches last year so figured I'd have a quick look around. A couple of the same patches fruited again as well as another that didn't produce anything as far as I saw last year. These are in planter boxes scattered around a shopping center. Didn't get pics of the first two little patches.
Didn't get a whole lot and I was a little late on these so some were a bit far gone for my standards. But the third patch- the new one- is covered with pins- looks like this box is about to be the best patch I've ever found, unless someone else gets em before I have a chance to come back in a few days- these things are right out in the open in front of a store.

Man I gotta go check my patches, still a bit bummed that my backyard patch hasnt fruited yet, but maybe in Marin it just hasn't gotten cold enough yet?

Mycelium is exploding out from the starter chips that I know have alleni mycelium on them onto all the woodchips around them, but I may have made this bed too shallow.  It's only like 3-4in deep, I should've made it half the size and twice and deep, but oh well.  If I don't get any fruits this year, I'll literally do just that.  Take half the patch, and put in on the other half so it is the way it shoulda been.

I’m starting my patch this year. I accidentally pulled up a couple pins still attached to the stick or wood chip, and transplanted them to my house. They continued to open up and drop spores. I also got a pressure cooker this year to start some grain spawn with some spores. I can’t wait to get my own patch. I want to collect multiple woodlover species and have a garden of eden in my yard.

I was finally able to get out and do some actual "hunting" yesterday for a little bit. I really didn't want to, I just can't stand being around urban/city areas much and all the busy/chaotic vibes of cars and people running around town, but I made myself get out there.

Glad I did because I found a new patch!

It was on the small side, but I collected about maybe 20g to 28g dry in total. All medium to almost large sized fruits, clean looking fruits with that classic "caramel cap" color, nice meaty/thick/healthy looking too. I left several dozen small fruits behind to grow up some more over the next week or so.

While I was collecting them I was super relaxed...I took my time and didn't have any worries about someone seeing me or wondering what I was doing (the patch was within a busy shopping center/parking lot area). The first few years I went hunting/picking I was always super nervous and a bit frantic when picking them, now that I'm a bit older and now that laws around mushrooms/psychedelics are loosening up I really don't have any worry when I pick mushrooms now lol. I still try to be a lil low-key about it, but I just do my thing as if I'm not doing anything wrong (because I'm not lol).

I think it should be plenty cold around Marin to trigger pinning/fruiting.

Still a little early in the season though...We have got a lot of early season rain this time around so the timing of fruiting might be a lil different, but past years I recall the peak of the season usually occurring between Dec 1st and X-mas. This season could be a bit different though.

I’ve noticed different spots within the same general 1/4 mile strip fruiting at different times as well. I thought a couple of my patches were dead or something (I didn't even see lots of characteristic mycelium), but when I came back two weeks later they had flushed out with tons of fruits.

It’s the best when you feel comfortable picking or find a more secluded spot. I used to not care at all when I was younger but now especially with these super public spots I still am very much on edge. Having a dog with you while hunting is the way to do it. Nobody ever even bats an eye.

The new patch I found today is so public, i caught quite a few glares

Use mushroomobserver.com or iNaturalist app to look up psilocybe in your area. It will show you on a map, the kinds of psilocybes people have found in your area. Then, go look around those areas for mushrooms. That’s the easiest way to get in the general area. Also, I wouldn’t ask for partners or specific places to hunt. It’s not allowed on the forum and I’m sure someone will get triggered over it.

part of my job involves training people how to be like top shelf manual drivers (defensive driving) and some of it covers urban centers, and we use SF.  So like literally I just have people driving me around the city all day long to train them, I am CONSTANTLY looking at mulch as we drive by every time hehehehe.

Hunting on the job, that’s what I like to hear. I’m jealous loll. Got to have a keen eye to spot them from the car, but these were clear as day. Always scoping new potential spots while I’m driving.

Is the consensus that these (left) are ovoids? How can you tell the difference? I found some that had a similar look near my allenii spot, but almost everyone says they’re allenii.

From my experience I would call the left cyan pins and the right ovoids, but I deal with the varieties up here in the Oregon-Washington area.  I don't know how ovoids present in the drier bay area.

If I had a dollar for every look-alike patch I’ve found in the past month, I could afford to retire early

I’m hunting 2-3 times per week, still no psilocybes. Damn these little guys for getting my hopes up.

Narrow down your searches to particular areas with the right type of chips. Those pictures aren’t really demonstrating that. Look for those red, black, or brown “naturescape” types. That will dramatically increase your odds of finding some actives. Good luck to you.

San Mateo County

Ps. Allenii

This is a patch from last year. Over the last year landscapers removed and replaced the bushes that used to be in this area. I suppose they churned up the chips and spread the mycelium.

I would agree with Piggy. It looks like one of them on the right has the remnants of a ring, which suggests ovoid over cyan or allenii. Cap shape on the left looks more like cyan, but I could definitely be wrong. Regardless, great ovoid finds earlier by Zen. Damn I miss the bay area winters.

I found a few last weekend in a well irrigated shaded spot...wasn't out hunting just taking a walk so I didn't have my phone to take pics.

A guy from Marin posted some active Gym's to the MHI&I forum a few days ago.

Those early big storms got me so pumped for a big season but then it was straight back to bright warm sunny fall norcal days, unbelievably beautiful but not good for shrooms. Amazing for biking, surfing and skating though. Hope everyone is still out there ejoying themselves!
:camping:

I've gone on some hikes in Marin county and seeing mushrooms in places on Mount Tam that have had nothing in years past so thats cool.

I'm pretty sure I found some active gyms in GGP a couple weeks ago.  I got specimens, took some rather crummy pics, but just ended up tossing them.  They had green spots on the cap, were red-ish purple, and were growing right out of a log. Probably should have done an ID request.

:werd:

Same here.

I've only been out to "hunt" and look around one day so far this season (actually found a new small patch, so that made it worth it)....and the one small patch I did find, some of the fruits were already starting to dry out a lil bit along the edge of the cap. That was several weeks ago and it has been even warmer & dryer since then, so I've had no interest in going out to look around in urban areas for actives.

I imagine it is still a good season for fungi in general out in the woods/hills, in oak woodland and riparian areas where a lot of moisture is kept in place with grass/trees/bushes....but pretty dry & warm in the cities/urban areas.

Nice to see everything greened up so early in the season from those early season storms, def beautiful out there....We're still in a severe drought tho and really need the precip.

This morning I returned to a park where I’ve walked my dog many times over the past three months (since it has a perfect habitat for mushrooms). I had an urge to just check again under a particular bush and voila… a few small allenii pins:

And this guy:

It’s funny how much of a factor timing is in hunting! I guess I have been hunting a bit too early so far this season. I will have to go back and check all of the spots where I have previously found nothing in the past two months!

Also on the subject of timing. Having seen nothing for three weeks, my wife ran past the first (and only other) patch I have found and saw a few pins popping up again.

She brought one back as a gift which was super kind.

But I did politely explain about damaging the mycelium… at least I have another stem butt to cultivate more patches with now, so I’m not complaining too much.

When it comes to this highly debated topic, I just listen to what Alan (Rockefeller,  that is) has to say.
He mentioned many times that it does not matter how you take them (gently, using scissors or just rip them with mycelium) - the life span of the patch will be the same regardless.

Zen that’s a healthy patch! Well done, why not harvest though?

j.jarvis nice amanita’s! I saw some today too and was stoked! What were yours growing under. The ones I saw were under Monterey Pine.

Went for a casual hunt not expecting any thing but wanted to see what was out there….

Wow, those are edibles?  Lots more to learn apparently.  I've seen a bunch of those princes in the last couple months.

Yes, amanitas were under a pine tree, and there were probably about 10 other species of mushrooms growing in that spot.  Seemed like a very healthy habitat.

Love the lbms under the really big brown prince.

I found some Allenii a few weeks ago and transported a few to my yard, which is full of compost and is a thriving ecosystem. A lot of scurfy twiglet grow there. This was in mid November. The ones I transported were still attached to wood chips. A few of them ran their course quickly but two of them lasted around 2 weeks, gradually bruising until their were mostly blue. i noticed a new type of mushroom coming up. Is it possible that new fruit could develop in my yard this year?

Most of my pics are in later stages because I didn’t get pictures initially unfortunately. They also are out of order. The last picture shows one cap completely blue after running its course.

Not sure I'm following exactly.  You say that it's a "new type", but are you meaning to say that this new type is really just a new flush of allenii?  I cannot really tell from these pics.  From what I've read, it isn't very common for migrated myc to just turn around and start fruiting immediately.  It probably isn't that unusual for a different type of fungi to appear in a suitable environment.

I noticed a mushroom had started to grow on wood (not on the transported wood chips that had Allenii growing on them but very nearby) but some animals had gotten to it so it wasn’t very recognizable although I could tell it wasn’t the typical scurfy twiglet I get. I didn’t know whether this could have hypothetically been Allenii based on a fast turnaround time from transport  (~3 weeks). Some of the chips I transported have a lot of mycelium on them as I keep them wet and under some greenery for moisture. I’m wondering whether it’s feasible I’ll get Allenii fruiting this season or whether it will take longer to fruit if they do at all.

Also if mushrooms are found in an urban environment (e.g., wood chips on an irrigated area in front of a apartment complex), are these typically safe to eat? Or is the risk of pesticides, etc, too great?

Also excited for all the rain in the forecast! 🤞

The amanitas are such a pretty mushroom.  I'm looking forward to the next couple weeks of hunting.  Found some more cyans today, no pics, but I'll take some next time I'm there as I left some and the conditions are pretty ideal right now here in the city.

I want to cultivate the stem bases. I tried last year with cardboard without great success. Are egg cartons any better to use?

That's probably the best finds I can remember someone posting from GGP in a while lol. I often wonder how many heads are actually hunting there and how over-picked patches are in GGP.

It is like the classic place folks in the city think of when it comes to hunting for actives lol....or even beyond the city lol, I hear about folks driving from many mile away just to hunt GGP specifically lol (likely newbs that don't know these mushrooms can be found all over the central/northern part of the state).

In my mind I always figure it's over-picked, but the place is so damn big and with so many nooks & crannies and so many prime habitats around I imagine there's always something to find for anyone determined.

I don't live in the city but I love that park...I've never been there during the active season or done any hunting there, but every time I have been there I see so many totally prime habitats for woodlovers all over the place. (not to sound like I'm hyping the place, since I reside in the valley basically anytime I go to the bay area I see tremendously more prime habitats out there than I do around here).

Check out this thread>>>>

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24673753/fpart/413

It is the woodlover cultivation thread, lots of info and chit chat about cultivating woodlovers, I feel asking about that in that thread is more fitting and you'll get more replies/info about such.

Cardboard and egg carton can both work for getting mycelium to expand from stem butts/creating spawn...I've had success and failure with both lol.

It is quite MOIST out there after that soaking :sporedrop: :shroompick:

Small patch during stroll [Re: openmind]
    #27581676 - 12/14/21 09:48 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Was out for a stroll and spotted a small patch.
Mainly dropping by to say ‘Hi’ this season!

It also looks like it was there before the recent rains - so they’re out there!  Hoping the recent precipitation will help for myco and the general water supply.  Haven’t been able to hunt to much this year - but hoping to get some in between the holidays.

You should see them now lol, twice as large and starting to turn brown yet still not rotting yet.
This location always surprises me every year. I might drive by again today with the camera we shall see.

Yeah.  Those allenii look great!

Here’s some pins from the same spot in GGP as yesterday.

I also got a couple cyans in a random spot in GGP.  Weird that there were only two but maybe, likely, I’m not the first hunter on the scene there.  That being said I’ll be keeping an eye on that location.

Season should be in full swing.  Got another spot I’ll be checking this weekend that had some really great fruits a month back.  I bet it’s full flush now.

hey OM, yeah I think GGP is aggressively hunted and I pretty much had given up the idea of finding anything in there at all.  However, once I became aware of this "sport" I started getting very acquainted with the detail of the park.  And then I really started getting into the minutia of all the things around me that grow and I really think this is one of the more rewarding aspects of hunting the park and indeed mushroom hunting in general.  It is less fun hunting the more urban areas (unless you get a big haul!).

Oddly, the find from yesterday didn't require any deep corner knowlege and in fact was found within 30 seconds of entering the park and was anything but private.  In fact I was walking past that area with a friend a couple months back and pointed at that spot and said I think this would be a possible location.  Sure enough!  I bet I looked rather suspicious harvesting those guys, but I was very quick about it.

Still haven't seen allenii and I had thought those might be the first ones that I might encounter.  They seem to get pretty big compared to the cyans I've been finding.  Still, I've had a pretty good season so far and it's about to explode!!!

That’s awesome you’ve been finding them in GGP. I’ve been looking there a lot the past few weeks but nothing I could confidently ID although I’ve been finding a lot of lookalikes!

I checked on a huge 3 mile long patch that I made about 15 years ago. Both cyans and Allen's are producing nicely. Mainly cyans now. But look at these? Are these lower 3 or 4 ovoids? More chunky than cyans.

those do look pretty weird for cyans.  You just get lucky and ovoids join your 3 mile party?

Nice finds tahoe, I think they are chunky allenii although with the early rain and then heat wave ZenZone found some great ovoid flushes in the central valley.

How awesome is that!
Nice to see you popping in Tahoe!

On another note, I found a new patch tadday. (Central Valley)
Most of them were gigantic but unfortunately most of them were too far gone,
black, rotten, frost bitten. But, there were a few worthy of harvest:

All of your GGP pics are impressive. I’m still massively struggling to find any sign of actives in GGP. I’m heading back there tomorrow for another look. If anyone has any words of advice I’m all ears.

I returned to the tiny patch I found in a dog park near my apartment and found a lone allenii sat on top of a chip. The mycelium nearby was all disturbed and this chip was just sat on top of the surface so I think I am sharing the patch with somebody else who cleaned out the second flush already.

But I had to take this one home because it was such a beauty..

I’ve stuck the whole thing (mushroom included) in a bag of alder smoking chips outside in the rain to see if I can’t propagate it!

Ernest.

hunting GGP is challenging.  First off, it's really big.  Secondly, there's lots of competition and I think the more experienced hunters (I'm a rookie) have a leg up on the rest of us with known locations.

That being said, they are definitely there right now, and I know of at least 3 locations that are producing presently but are too young to pluck just yet.

Persistence is the key, long grasses need to be look at closely.  The redwood groves are probably not great although I have seen a lot of non-redwood woodchips mixed in.

My more productive spots are not in GGP at all, and I think the key to bigger finds is to hunt elsewhere.

That being said, it's a wonderful park and there's a lot in there that I wasn't aware of until I started hunting it.

You all got me excited had to run out to a known spot! Got a small handful, but I saw lots of pins! Also checked a spot very close to this one and it had no signs of fruit.
Good luck out there this weekend everyone. I’ll be foraging but for edibles not actives.

You can throw them in a water bottle, shake them up, then pour them over new habitat.  At this point they would be better use getting another spot going.

I like to smear those old ones all over my shoes when I'm out hunting.  Spread them by hunting, you'll be visiting all the right habitat anyway.

GGP giveth [Re: justjarvis] * 1
    #27588416 - 12/20/21 02:45 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

Well, I've had a bountiful week.  Everyday I've picked cyans.  Yesterday's find was pretty decent with about 35 fruits.

Today, near the same location as yesterday, was quite a bit more than that.

I left quite a few pins to pull later this week.

Sadly, I'm a pretty bad photographer.

Alright I've been depressed as hell lately, got fired without any reasonable cause.  They just cut a bunch of departments down before the end of the fiscal year.

Happy holidays, you're all fired, and TWM we assigned your promotion to someone else.  Your fired as well.

le sigh.  I need to remember that our job isnt our identity.

Thanks, yeah it was my largest find so far.  Went back today, found the 3 adults I missed the first time.  There is a distinct possibility of more in that general area, but I'll probably wait until the rain comes to look for them.

Central Valley [Re: justjarvis] * 2

After hunting for the last 3 years to no avail this year I was finally successful! I have to thank Zen Zone for inspiring me to keep looking in the central valley.
These alenii were found yesterday in sacramento in a parking lot of some old office buildings. There were two small patches about 30ft apart in the same wood chipped median.
The last pic is of a chunk of what looks like blue mycelium attached to the base of an old fruit that i harvested to spread the patch to other areas.

Nice work distancesocial! I have a feeling you might find more there after this storm.

On another note: It's so easy to miss them once leaves cover everything.
And of course, finally, weeks later the landscapers come in, blow the leaves,
and here I am looking at them all dead/dried/rotten

Found a good sized patch of cyanescens today in south Sf. Looks like they just came up a day or two ago.  Very public place so could not snap photos.o have a real good feeling about the next few weeks……

Got these around Berkeley mostly public areas in woodchipped landscaping so no pics in the ground but my first time with a find after about a month of searching.

If a cap has lost or is losing it's caramel color, does that mean it's stopped growing?

probably means it got dry, they are hygrophanous which just means they change color when they gain or lose water.

Today's finds from South Bay, near Gilroy/Morgan Hill area. Lots of Cyans, some Allenii. Growing off some apartment complexes. I am loving these continuous rains and high humidity. I strongly felt something while searching for these. Looks like they want to grow in close proximity to high human trafficked areas, as opposed to similar habitat with small human activities. Further, they will hide there right next to human population - close but hard to find...interesting type of consciousness these entities have!

And these are from central Bay area, wood chips garden beds.

More coastal finds, guess I'll need to head inland if I want to find Allenii.

Usually when I see the cap start to dry out, I just harvest them no matter what size they are. I can’t say 💯%, but from what I’ve seen the last two years with Allenii, once they start to dry out they stall growth wise for the most part if not completely. There’s probably some exceptions, and maybe if conditions immediately improve some might keep growing, but I haven’t really seen that happen. Maybe someone with more experience hunting or even cultivating their own patches has some insight?

A small Cyan patch I’ve known about has started up again in northern Sonoma county. Left a bunch of smaller fruits and pins. Harvested a small handful of mature ones. I’m sure there’s someone else who knows about the spot. Hopefully we can each be respectful and not get too greedy😅 Enjoy the great 🍄Christmas🍄 weather we’re having!!

Bury that puppy in a pot of potting soil so 1/3 of it is above the soil and lay down a couple inches of soaked wood chips.  By next year you should have a cyan pot!

This is also another wonderful example of wood lovers having no problem eating pine.

So I went back to that older flush at Taco Bell ( they are closed today so it was easier to snap some shots)

Happy holidays y’all. Has anyone else ever found a spot because another forager was obvious about it? I was in GGP yesterday and the forager was in an area for 45+ minutes scuffling through the same area of plants and carrying a big bag. I didn’t check out the patch myself because they were there so long. What’s the ethics of going to that patch another day? Feels kind of wrong to use someone else’s spot they found. But it also seems like it was a big haul.

I didn't harvest the caps that lost color--I'll go back tm or the day after and check on them.

Meanwhile, I found these on the way to xmas dinner in San Mateo county.

Another find from the capitol! I think I have finally honed my eye for habitat, either that or this year is exceptional for the valley actives. This patch hadnt fully developed most of its fruits so I will be coming back to get the rest in a couple days. The close up pics are of a fruit that i found a few yards away from the one pictured. It looks to me to maybe be an oviod due to the ring on the stipe but i dont have the expertise to know for sure. Thanks again Zen Zone for the words of encouragement, I think you and I are the only ones posting finds from the valley this year.https://

Spent the day in the bay. I am not stoked on the
picture quality of my phone.
A little bit of what the people want. Found some nice oysters but of course I don't have pics.

DAMNNNNN BRO! That’s what my haul of allenii looked like about 6 weeks ago. I’d like to see what that weighs dried. I’m guessing over 2 pounds. Awesome! Makes me wanna go back out and look for new spots, but then I’m like I already have enough to last for several years. Lol! I guess you can never have too many mushrooms.

My finds were all from the valley, but they’re way back in the beginning of this thread. I live 2.5 hours from SF so it’s definitely not my stomping grounds for hunting. My current spot is an hour drive from me already. If I went to the Bay Area to hunt it would take me half the day just to drive there and back. Over three hunting trips I collected about a pound and a half dried P. Allenii. I’d love to find some cyan spots and some Azurescens too. My goal is to have my own cultivated patches and not have to worry about hunting. Hunting is fun, but as it get more popular, I’m sure my current spot will be discovered by someone.
