Welcome to Shrommery :mushroom2:

You´re in a very good temp range (68-75 would be perfect),
but i bet you shot spores direct to grains.
May be a problem, as spores aren´t always clean.
Best inoculation practice for bags would be LI/LC or G2G.
Give it a week more and maybe post a picture then.

Yes, grains were directly inoculated in the center. Spores came from a reputable company (Our sponsors are reputable companies). Maybe there is mycelium growth in the middle of the grains and just hasn't reached the outside yet? Oh well just have to wait and see i suppose 🤷

Mod Edit: do not mention spore vendors by name or link to them in Mushroom Cultivation. Please familiarize yourself with the rules before posting.

'Reputable' vendor does not equate to sterile spore syringes.  They still need to be cleaned up before expanding to grain.

Please read the forum rules and edit the vendors name out of your post.

He did. Spores aren't sterile, so spore to grain is very risky.

More importantly please remove vendor from post as its against the rules. Its for their protection because their spores are for microscopy only.

Mate, that´s not the best way to start into Shroomery.
PBJ is a very friendly and helpful user,
he just pointed you to the right direction.

lol

10 days is not a lot of time. be patient

and telling you not to squirt spores onto grain is as helpful as it gets. ill add "dont buy grain bags online". ive done what you just did and it can work but theres a low success rate

start here next time

I fail to see how that wasn't helpful. You should consider using agar and inoculating grains with it instead of spores. If you aren't able to use agar at this time you could always do a grow using brf cakes.

Do you still have your spore syringe? You should get started with agar while you wait on that other work to grow.

I'm new to this, but thought that spore syringe to grain was accepted practice.  You guys are saying it's risky and has a low success rate?  Dang

My situation right now sounds pretty similar to the OP's.  I bought a syringe of B+ from an established vendor.  Squirted part of the syringe into a grain bag (also purchased from an established vendor) and the rest of the syringe went into some rye berry jars fresh out of the PC.

I saw nothing for at least 6 days.  Finally some white growth in the bag, then little spots in some of the jars.  It's been 12 days now since inoculation.  The bag looks promising but I'm concerned the jars are drying out.  I modified the jar lids, adding SHP's and a small piece of felt.  I'm guessing too much moisture is escaping thru the felt.

You can grow mushrooms by squirting spores in grain, but it isn't recommended. It is likely that you'll experience more failure than success. Grain is pretty cheap, so if you want to say 'fuck it' and try your luck at spore to grain, go right ahead. Just don't get your hopes up.

Perhaps I should give longer responses so it doesn't seem like I'm just being snippy, but that's not how I roll

Most new growers *assume* that the syringe is clean because it came from a commercial business that manufacturers them in ideal conditions.  While it's true that they absolutely try to make the cleanest spore syringes possible, due to the nature of where spores are grown (not in sterile environments) they often bring along low backlevels of contamination.  The syringe will still be 99.x% what you are looking for, but that .x% can easily be enough to cause serious issues with the culture's health if it's not removed from the start.

I had 2 syringes from that vendor that were so bacterial that streaking to agar just left jizz streaks on the plate.  Had to run PFtek with it to get some prints and fruits to clone to put on agar.

Where to start flowchart:

I saw videos online showing syringe to grain, which seemed weird to me but the last time I grew shrooms was 40 years ago.  Oss & Oeric's book was my sole source of guidance.

So Reader's Digest, what's the best way to use spore syringes?  Inoculate a bunch of petri dishes, then hope that some of the dishes will be good?

If a person has nothing, no spore prints or etc. is there a better way to start from scratch than syringes?

Hey, thanks for the flowchart!

Syringe or print to agar. Clean up a sample.

If you wanna just shoot spores use brf cakes, they handle it better.

Most of the net sucks for mush cult. Books never update and are 1 persons opinion without any checks.

If I had my choice to start with it would be spore print > agar.  Streak each plate and do 2-3 plates.  You should get plenty of options to take transfers from - just pick the fastest growing cultures along those streaks to move on to T1.

pf tek is exactly what youre looking for then. minimum investment of time and money, a monkey could do it, and youll have enough for personal consumption plus more to share. but ACTUALLY follow the instructions if you want it to work. for some reason people dont
