Soil mold
    #2750347 - 05/31/04 07:08 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hey, just a quick question. I planted some San Pedro and Peruvian Torch cacti seeds about a week ago. Following some advice on the inernet, I sterilized the pots, made a soil mix, put these seeds under 1/8" of soil, watered, put in a bag, and placed under a 60 watt light for about 18 hours per day.

While just today when I was opening the bag to circulate the air I noticed mold. It's white fuzzy mold growing around the corner of both pots, and I also noticed a faint smell. I'm assuming this is because I never sterilized the soil itself, and it probably had some fungus that thrived in the humid warm terranium set-up. My question now is, does this mean I should start over (I am anyways) and get rid of these two pots, or keep them going seperately incase the cacti still grow? Basically- can cactus seeds still survive this? I wouldn't be ingesting these ones, so the mold isn't a problem really, and after they sprout I would transplant them.

white fluffy mould, in my experience, dies very quick once the humidity is taken away. It needs lots of humidity to live. the 60 watt is adding to it as incandecents are hot.

i highly doubt it will effect the seeds. if it were me i would dry it out a little, it sounds too wet to me.

You don't have to start over. Just let the soil dry out for awhile.

To get rid of the mold & stop it from spreading:
I've heard that sprinkling powdered cinnamon (from your kitchen spice rack) on the top of the soil can be an effective fungicide. Powdered sulfur also works as a fungicide. Some drugstores sell "flowers of sulfur" in a regular-looking pill bottle, but you might have to ask the pharmacist for it. Garden centers carry 1 pound bags of sulfur for lawns. Another thing I have done is put a few drops of liquid fungicide I bought from a garden center (Home Depot) into a spray bottle with an 2 ounces of water, then sprayed the top of the soil.

Thanks a lot, good thing I decided it keep it going. I decided to dry the soil out anyways, as I think it was a bit too humid, and it seemed to clear it up a bit, but there's still a little mold. I'll try the cinnamon trick you suggested though

The easiest thing to do is just spray some neem oil on it. Kills it right away and you just keep on growing. Neem oil is natural so it won't affect the plants!

Good luck.

good to know. i dont knwo about neem oil, but most oils will dry leaving a film over everything. good for the mould as it will kill it. But remember the plant needs its stoma's clear to exchange everything. I would wipe it off the plant if possible.
