Pan Cyan Substrate Question HELP PLEASE
    #2750262 - 05/31/04 06:33 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Sorry to ask the same question here as in my grow log , but I get quicker answers here

would cow-dung/vermiculite be enough as a substrate for    ?
I also wanted to add grass seed to that but

If you're only pasteurizing and spawning you shouldn't use grass seed.  I think that the grass seed could lead to contamination.  If you want grass seed in there I think it'd be best to make it a part of the spawn.

I have colonized bird seed as spawn already, so I dont know if I should forget about using grass seed? Does grass seed add a great
value to the substrate that cow-dung/verm would not be enough for?

Since I dont have a glove box or flow hood I thought it would be better to pasteurize than sterilize. But had never contamination problems before, when growing cubensis. If I sterilize and hope to work clean, could I use grass seed? oh man I even confused myself with this much text on one simple question..  sorry..
cant decide..please help because I want to get started with the substrate tomorrow or the next day

Why are you so zealous about adding grass seed? Cow dung is about the best thing you can have. The only thing I can think of is for airation, but the verm can do that by just fluffing and not packing when putting in a container.

Why do you want to add grass seed so bad?

Is there a problem with straw? Try straw and dung; people have been using it for decades.

I thought it would be important, or it would not be in the recipe I found on mushmush (under methods/notes/..). Thought it might have to do something with nutrition. But suppose dung should suffice(?) If it is so, I will only use cowdung and vermiculite. Should I make a 50/50 mix?

Make a layer of poo/straw mix, then add your spawn, then cap off with an inch thick layer of poo. Make sure no straw is exposed. Atleast that's what my rottweiler told me.

I could use straw but dont have perfectly sterile contidions (like glow box or flowhood) and I heard of straw being contaminated more easily. Guess I will make 6 trays, 3 with grass seed/dung/verm and three with dung/verm, to test. Hope I will get any mushrooms at all

If using ryegrass seed it should be sterilized.

My favorite Pan recipie.

4 parts pre moistened manure
1 part pre moistened vermiculite
1 part presoaked and drained ryegrass seed

Mix all ingredients, load in quart jars at 1-1.5 cups per jar, and pressure cook at 15 psi for 90 minutes(14 jars). inoculate with mycelium (agar wedges) or multispore syringe. Colonize and case in 8"x8" brownie tins. Case with the thinnest layer of peat:vermiculite you can to not see mycelium anymore. Keep moist and give lots of air unitl you see pins. Stop misting when you have pins, and increase airflow.

Pins in 5-9 days from casing. Increased evaporation rate from casing surface yields best quality fruits and best spore production. Short stems and wide caps!!!
Your casing surface should almost be dry by the time the fruits mature. Any misting to fruits can and will lead to aborts and excessive bluing of fruits.

Best environmnetal description of fruit maturation parameters is:

WET FEET DRY HEADS

Good luck, try all methods and see what works best for you. If you can't get any fruits before the green sets in, USE THE METHOD OUTLINED ABOVE.

I HATE STRAW becasue it seems to hate me and my environmnetal parameters. Yes I have had some great straw casings, but I ALWAYS have great casings with a known clone and the above method. I can't say the same thing about straw, and particularly straw and Copelandia.

With Copelandia it is all about how fast you can get from inoculation to fruit, the more steps the more time, and the more risk. Bypassing spawning all together yields the most consistent results for me.
