Only in perceived high and overlay traits to be fair, too many different looking fruit from one strain to visually say they are the same or different.
I don't think I've seen this much variation in one mushroom before.
Even growing in the wild they look different from biome to biome a couple kms apart, sugar cane fields also produce a different looking mush.

I don't understand the post either, is he talking us back to Natalensis being a cube strain?

No it’s just different enough to be a separate thing.

The fruits look different just becouse they grew in different environments. But the mycelium looks and acts exactly the same.

Alan thank you for sharing your work here, it's great to see that there are so many psilocybin-containg species that we still know little of.
Can I PM you regarding a Psilocybe species (Collybioides) that was described by Singer here in Argentina in 1952 and almost never again mentioned? Perhaps someday I'll be able to travel north to Tucuman and look for it, alongside the real P. Hoogshagenii.

This is so cool. Are there any good resources (books/sites) to learn how exactly to interpret these trees?

Hello all, here's a weird one. This box did not colonize completely before it started to pin, so I assumed it was contaminated, moved it to the garage, and forgot about it. Found these today.

I'm not running anything else right now and the rest of my nat tubs are throwing regular fruits, so I'm positive it's not a mislabel. Spores were taken from these:

Nice mexican hat!

Sent Aka-1 the clone from a few pages back to its first shoebox, within two weeks we will see what comes up.

It was a joke lol. I like the pheno but that was an abort from a super bacterial tub. Didn’t clone it or anything, i just loved that little mushroom with all of my heart

I have a nat tub that put out many little/medium size sombrero-like fruits in the third flush. It probably is bacterial as well

What ratio of
spawn:sub
are you folks using for P-Nat?

How thick a casing layer?

Casing or pseudo-casing?

What are you doing different than from what you'd do with cubes?

Thank you

I have no way of knowing that because I don't have a sequence of Psilocybe natalensis other than the one I generated from a spore print sent to me labeled "Natal Super Strength".

All I can tell right now is that what I got as "NSS" is not Psilocybe cubensis.  Since it matches microscopically with Psilocybe cubensis, as P. natalensis should, I think it's very likely that it is labeled correctly.  Another possibility is that the NSS I have is another Psilocybe species that is related to cubensis.

A lot of people online are saying the there is a cube strain going as NSS - I have no way of knowing if that is true.  My guess is that it isn't, and that what is going around as NSS is what I have sequenced.  Sequencing more things labeled NSS would provide more information.

Yes you can pm me.  P. collybioides hasn't turned up, perhaps it's a synonym of a better known species, or maybe it's a valid taxon.  The original species description says that the gills are white, which is common in P. muliercula.  The cheilocystidia drawings look different, but those aren't super reliable.  We'll know more about it when someone sends me a sample.

The real P. hoogshagenii was described from Sierra Mixe of Oaxaca, one of the sequences of this species I uploaded to Genbank was collected from very near the type location so I am pretty sure it's the right one.  I also have a matching sequence from Huautla de Jimenez, Oaxaca.    South American material definitely needs to be studied, and the name Psilocybe subhoogshagenii should be considered.  That one was described from Colombia.

I don't know of anything that stands out, but there's been quite a bit written about it.  https://www.google.com/search?q=interpreting+phylogenetic+trees
