This might be a a good approach. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=2&Number=27426583&fpart=&PHPSESSID= I use straw/manure 50/50.
Can I ask why you dont use coir?
In your experience does hpoo and straw work better for nats compared to just straight coir?

Straw is a food source. So is manure but manure also makes the fruits look better. With just grain and coir the fruits are wanky and they crack... I Wana try 100% manure at some point and see how that goes. That's what they used in the studies posted somewhere in this thread.

This was the composted manure and verm mix I use for pans.

I didn’t run the culture with anything else so idk for sure but they did have the best color and more solid stipes than any other nats I’ve had.

Any casing will promptly be overlaid again. Mine will do this until the 2nd flush or so...
Damn, I was way late. Idk why it put me 2 pages back

Did you pick off the overlay or just leave it?

This post seems like a counterpoint
There’s nothing but counter points with this species. Someone says something and two posts later it’s disproven. I still think it comes down to genetics on whether they overlay or not but I’m sure someone will say the operator in a few posts

Thank you. Looks great. I just sent some of my p. nat agar to WBS today. I'm excited!
To be clear, do you mean grain spawn added to coir, or grain spawn added to coir + grain? (Sounds rare, but there is a thread about doing that with Cubes on here).

What a rabbit hole i got myself into...
Well, after complete harvest tomorrow or the day after (they do take a long time to fully open their caps) i will apply some more coir to cover the excess mycelium, put fleece on top of the boxes instead of letting them sweat and move them directly to the window for more light. That should take care of excess humidity, CO2 and lack of light.
Let´s see what happens.

I am worried that a verticilium contamination may be involved. I have spotted them in one of my cubensis cultures and overall nothing seems to want to grow straight this time around. Only the Rusty White reverts or whatever i got there seem unaffected.

Those look very healthy to me. Even the overlay looks exceptionally clean.
As we’ve said a lot recently also, those gnarly one that look like they exploded seem to be consistently potent.

Yes, grain spawn added to coir/verm.

I agree, they don´t look unhealthy. They just don´t know which direction to grow to. At least one factor is off. The exploded ones were deformed from the beginning. Didn´t think much of it. They will end up blended with the rest and contribute to the test result once my test kits arrive.

Nek: I always pulled mine off with the first flush. Sometimes it'll return for the 2nd, sometimes not. Makes a nice tea!
Wall: Overlay is certainly genetic, it'll happen regardless of conditions. Even the agar wants to pop its plates open.
I might have to grab up a new print if anyone's got an overlay-free strain. Mine honestly aren't even very potent...
