What's a good filter/fan combo for a flow hood?
    #27447196 - 08/28/21 11:50 PM (2 years, 5 months ago)

I'm not finding any recent posts. Looking to buy and build asap but having trouble deciding on what to get. Thanks!

Filter: https://fungi.com/products/24-x-24-x-5-8-micron-filter

Fan: https://www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-OEM-Blower-1TDU2

Both work really well together in my experience and 2x2 is a great space, but I'm def looking forward to getting a 2x4. Fan Filter Units (FFU's) are also an option at around $1k a piece brand new and come completely assembled and ready to go as a single unit.

If you still want to build one, here's a good place to start reading:

Go bigger than you think, 30x48 is the ideal size! You can do anything comfortably.

https://electricmotorwarehouse.com/dayton-model-1tdu2-blower-1202-cfm-1390-rpm-115-230v-60-50hz-4c831/

1tdu2 is too much fan for a 2x2. Whoever is doing the flowhood specs over there may be confused. 2x2=400 cfm for 100 fpm. 360 cfm for the preferred 90 fpm.

(And that is if you totally dismiss the area of the frame which is commonly done for amateur hoods but if you wanted to get really precise you would subtract that area meaning even less air required)

1tdu2 is ~1040 cfm at the static pressure these filter are running at 90fpm (~0.5-0.6" most commonly + 0.2 prefilter.)

In case you didn't notice 1040 is way more than 400 or 360 or the real number minus the frame to get 90 fpm something like 335 cfm.

That means that they are blowing well over 200 fpm, or somewhere in the middle since blowing faster will also increase the static pressure. And that is wildly outside of standard accepted ISO clean bench specs. I wonder if they really are using this combo

If you will notice on there they all say 1.0" static pressure but the test speeds are way over 90 fpm and static pressure is a function of airflow. They are totally disregarding this apparently.

It also says

Quote:

*Rated CFM indicates the approximate amount of air needed for proper filtration. Actual rating varies by production lot.

which is not exactly true, the rated cfm indicates the test speed or intended speed for a certain static pressure. There is absolutely no requirement to move a minimum amount of air to get proper filtration, this is just a point of reference for the efficiency of filtration and static pressure verses speed. It sounds like the same thing but there is need to move that much air, it is much more air than 90 fpm typically. For example their 2x4 filter has a "rating" of 1.0" @ 1200 cfm, much more than 720 cfm to get 90 fpm.

So I really don't know what is going on with them in that regard. It is confusing.

You can definitely go bigger than needed and block of part of the intake though. That way you can use more of the filter as it loads up but you shouldn't oversize it too much if at all.

Personally Id spec it just at 100 fpm from the get go, you'll get 2-5 years+ of use out of hepa before it drops below 80 fpm minimum speed. Too much speed makes for a poor laminar flow, then it's more of a hepa fan not a flowhood. Can still be successful but it's not proper. All kinds of dumb shit can be successful if you hang around the OMC long enough. I've seen a flowhood made out of a thousand straws glued together out there in the ether, and he just wont hear about it being wacky and swears it works last I heard...

All I can say on that is this:

I have the fan choked back and an anemometer to measure it and have it exactly at .4-.5m/s at any given time so I know it's exactly within range. Pretty standard from what I've seen around these parts and I've never had an issue with mine. It was pretty close even without me choking it back on the intake. According to Bod, it lasts longer as you can deliver more power from the fan to the filter as it ages. At least, that's my understanding and has been for the several years which I built and have utilized mine with great success.

But those odd dimensions of a filter do sound pretty nice. I could see myself pedaling a heat sealer in front of one of those bad boys. Thank for the link! May look into this for a future date. Wanna work on my craftsmanship too. Who knew building a box could be a PITA. If that doesn't work, there's always FFU's. :super:

1tdu2 works great for a 2x2 and there's a lot of people's hoods with that fan for a 2x2 filter.

You'll find you don't need to restrict it all that much to get to the appropriate flow FPM off your filter face.

Id say get a blower that can do at least 150% of what you need bare minimum

Also I can run my 2x2 at >150fpm to clean the air up in my room before working. Or cool agar down faster. It doesn't need to be laminar for that purpose

Great info everyone, thank you. How does this combo look? The comments for this filter recommend this blower.
