Retro gaming addiction
    #27486850 - 09/30/21 05:20 AM (1 year, 4 months ago)

(Sorry for the blog post)

When I was really young my family didn’t have too much cash, all of the video games we got were hand me downs from cousins (who were angry their parents forced over the nes to me)

It became an addiction from an early age, nes, sega genesis. N64 and ps1 was being sold in stores at the time and I started working young to buy games because my folks didn’t have the money to shell out tons of cash. I got a snes in middle school for $60 with 14 games, most of them first party, and it quickly became my favorite system. I was in high school in the mid to late 2000s and a lot of this shit was super cheap back then, and could easily be found on Craigslist or elsewhere locally. By the time I graduated I had amassed hundreds of video games.

I moved out of my parents at the ripe age of 19 and got addicted to Pussy and booze and quickly forgot about video games. Obviously I took a couple systems with me but rarely played. In 2016 or so, my parents told me they were selling the house. One day they showed up at my apartment with a truck load full of rarities from my mothers basement: a boxed sega Saturn, a neo geo pocket color. Sega cdx with a 32x attachment and a complete knuckles chaotix, gameboys of every color and variety. Atari lynx, virtual boy cib. All the main nintendo systems in boxes of varying condition, the list goes on. 40+ ps1 games in jewel cases, some common, some rare, many cracked and scratched. Nintendo power and egm magazines from a bygone era, and my prized possessions: castlevania Dracula x and chrono trigger on snes. All kinds of other random stuff and rarities from the days when gaming was actually good.

Well as any 25 year old burn out would do I immediately hit eBay and threw all of the money I made over the next 2 months towards dabs, alcohol, the casino, and cocaine. I was smart enough to keep a decent chunk of the collection though but it didn’t last long, I ended up selling the last 60-70 or so games (all the good ones) to my brother for $700 in 2019 so I could get to a music festival. I regretted it pretty much immediately. My brother got a fucking steal as some of those games were worth a couple hundred alone but that was the point, I wanted the games to stay in the family because we grew up playing them. I bought an emulator, but to me it just wasnt the same.

I’m on a mission to get all my games back and hold onto them for life. I no longer game more than a couple times a month. I don’t play xbox or pc or ps5 or whatever they got now. 90% of the Nintendo releases in the past 15 years or so have been garbage as well. To me, gaming just isn’t the same anymore and has massively changed in recent years. I know I sound like an old man, and I know it’s nerdy and childish, but I’m on a mission to get a decent chunk of my old collection back. I don’t play more than once or twice a month (when I do I dedicate a night to it) but I want it to be their for me when I’m an old man, there’s something very comforting about these games to me. This is part of the reason why im growing shrooms, a chunk of change (maybe 10-20% of each grow) is being traded for old school games.

Edit: yes, I realize emulation is a thing, but to me it just isn’t the same

Not even if you get a USB controller? You can get adapters to have it plug into a CRT tv.

Unless you're dead set on the collection aspect.

You're about a decade too late to start collecting CIB etc, OP. It's more expensive than it's ever been. Good luck and I'd suggest putting that money into retirement instead, but you do you! I was balls deep in that from 2007-2017, and saw it all decline along with what was an amazing community in NintendoAge/SegaAge.

At one point I had almost completed the 900+ CIB NES collection, and even when it was cheaper it wasn't worth it lol. Sold it all off and I'd do it again gladly, considering they're all worth like, 3x as much now!

:pm: to chat I know all about this shit!

I’m only getting a few cib, my favorites. Most will be loose. Still insanely expensive

What was your username on nintendoage? I was on that back in the day, along with a few others

I was Nostalgic Machine on NA. I miss those classic days! It was a real solid community. That was like, 2010-2015ish? DAMN!
