Ya thats crazy. Lots of circuits in the us even are only 15 amps.
Torches are simple and efficient toys are cool but sounds like a lot of trouble to do what a torch does just fine.

16 amps at 230 volts is nearly 4000 watts lol, it's only 135 watts 0.587 amps on 230 volt or 1.1 amps on 120v.

Ya my bad it’s the plug that says 16A not the actual device.

I had been using a torch just fine yeah, but I got it for a specific reason. I’m growing invitro and I’m trying to make super super clean prints. So I’m gonna get stainless steel tweezers, open the containers in front of the hood, remove the caps with scalpel and tweezers and transfer them to sterilised deli pots with foil at the bottom. I’d struggle with a torch and feel like it’d get sloppy. Some people might think it’s unnecessary to get a clean print but it just makes me feel better about the whole process and final result.

yeah, I think the bacticinerators are kinda stupid especially when you consider the price and how long 1 tank of propane lasts for a burner if youre only using it to flame cult tools

The only time those seemed worth having to me is when you gotta do huge plate sessions and you could have two scalpels so one is always ready to go.
I’m so used to the torch now it’s basically autopilot, I’ve also nearly torched random stuff like a swab and a sharpie before because of that

Ha right tho. Got to be slowing it down sometimes.
Got the torch reaching for the iso like...... waaaaaaaiiiit!
Not today.
Nearly blew myself up with iso in a glove box, I'll be damned if something happens to my filters lol.

Exactly what I’ll be doing. Getting a 24 x 48 hood next week. Its pointless for standard work I agree with what people are saying, but it’s very handy for what I need it for.

That’s why I love my blazer angled torch. Quick one handed off n on, nice tight blue flame heats tools quick. Shape makes it super stable, angle means I can set it right next to my work surface and keep tools close to flow.

Open flames, especially torches, cause a lot of turbulence. Many professional labs do not allow open flames inside clean benches. https://www.cpp.edu/~rmogul/safety_files/Aseptic%20Technique.pdf
Quote:
Ideally, all aseptic work should be conducted in a laminar cabinet (see Basic Protocol 2 and Alternate Protocol). However, work space preparation is essentially the same for working at the bench. Flame sterilization is used as a direct, localized means of decontamination in aseptic work at the open bench. It is most often used (1) to eliminate potential contaminants from the exposed openings of media bottles, culture flasks, or test tubes during transfers, (2) to sterilize small instruments such as forceps, or (3) to sterilize wire inoculating loops and needles before and after transfers. Where possible, flame sterilization should be minimized in laminar-flow environments as the turbulence generated by the flame can significantly disturb the sterile air stream.
Quote:
6. If flame sterilization is needed in the hood for a particular application, use a burner that can be activated by a pilot light when needed, rather than one that burns constantly. The open flame of a Bunsen burner causes turbulence that disrupts the unidirectional laminar air flow.
Quote:
If direct flame sterilization of items within the cabinet is necessary, use an electric burner or pilot light–activated flame burner located at the back of the work space.
So it is not stupid at all, it's the correct tool for heat sterilizing in a hood. Totally not necessary but it is the correct tool still.

Though I never knew for sure, I always suspected this, especially when you’re constantly moving around with it, which was another big reason for getting it.
Thanks for the confirmation.

I’d hope that your torch isn’t upstream of your work. And again why the one handed on off is handy. You don’t leave it on during work, flame your tool, turn it off.

I use my dab torch to sterilize tools just downwind of the work aiming the flame downstream It heats up a scalpel or loop in a couple seconds. An small induction coil to instantly heat instruments would be trick , no extra turbulence. No open flame. Has anyone seen one made for labs ?

Thats pretty much what a bacticinerator is.
They use IR heat to sterilize tools but it is also worth noting that most bacticinerators are sold as "loop sterilizers" because they dont get a scalpel read hot if I'm not mistaken.

I've seen some DIY induction coil things on reddit. They are in a little tupperware and look really janky.

The scalpel blade turns red in less than 10 seconds, i love my zapper.
The torch i have needs both hands to use it so is a pita. I bought mine for like 100$ on aliexpress, i have definitely wasted more money on other cult tools that are really useless. But the zapper is not one of them.
