How bad did I screw my cactus up?

I've had this cactus for a couple years now. It's a Bridgesii/Pachanoi cross.
This black shit showed up after a few days of fairly heavy rain, I think. I honestly mostly put them outside and forget about them during Summer, so it really could have been going on for a couple weeks, but I pulled them in after a few days of rain. Temps went from around 95F at the highest to 55F at the lowest.
It's in Miracle Gro cactus soil, just straight out of the bag. The bottom of the pot has plenty of holes for drainage. I don't use plant food or anything. I just let it get rained on and pull them inside when it gets too cold and that's about it.
I'm just wondering if I may need to cut this off or if I can just keep it dry, give it sun and let it scar over? I really don't want to cut it, I'd like to have 4 tall columns coming out of the pot like it's doing, but if I have to I can chop the top off.
-------------------- Yep.

Well that's not what I wanted to hear, but it's pretty much what I expected.
I guess it's time to test potency.
Luckily I have a few more of them, although they're not nearly as big.

Yeah man, it's not the end of the world. I would just cut directly under that spot, and the rest would be fine. Or just take that whole column out, leaving the pups, and they will continue to grow a lot faster.

Well, I chopped it. Decided to go ahead and cut up the good parts for dehydration. Hopefully there's a good amount of alkaloids in it.

Oh yeah, I've got a handful more. Some Pachanoi, the Bridgesii/Pachanoi that was in question, some Peruvianus and a few Williamsii.

I'll have to post some of mine real soon!
Are yours grown strictly indoors, and if so, what kind of light do you give them?

I leave them outside as much as I can. No fertilizers, just rainwater. The laziest way I can do it. This time of year I bring them in and out depending on temps and rain. I'll wait until they're completely dry, then I have a closet that gets some decent light but also stays kind of chilly during the winter.
Is this the right way to do it? I have no real clue, but it seems to work so I keep doing it. The one that got rot is the only one that has ever had that problem in the 5-6 years I've had them.

Yeah, I just started growing cacti again. I actually gave up growing them for years after moving here from Florida where I could leave them out year round, and I've never had to bring them indoors.
I've started to accumulate quite the collection since I started back up, and I have a ton of seedlings that I grew from seed back in the late winter.
I know my seedlings will be fine under grow lights, but I don't know what to do with my big boys so they don't get etiolated.
So, you just put yours in a dimly lit cold closet for the winter, and that's it?
I'll post a few pics of mine tomorrow

Zone 4, they go into a cold, dark basement 6-8 months out of the year.

Very nice man
I'm going to put mine in the cold dark shed, and hope for the best. How dark does it need to be?

My basement stays around 50°F and gets a tiny bit of light from small north facing windows... so not entirely dark, but it's dark enough for dormancy.

Correct, never had any issues with etoliation. In the spring they go directly to full sun, I'll cover with blankets on nights that frost.
