I probably googled for hours trying to find out whether that works, and while I didn't get a clear disconfirmation, my impression is that it's inefficient and makes a really miniscule amount of active ingredient. For reference, when making peracetic acid at home, it needs a mineral acid catalyst (sulfuric acid). And the reaction is slow--max yield occurs after 80-90 hours. (The paper I found only said to wait a day.) This is the paper that describes a multi-day reaction:
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/ja01209a502
In short, you have pretty much no potency if you just spray the two reactants with: 95%+ water, no catalyst, no waiting.

I make a spray called MMS, or sodium chloride. Supposedly it's one of the best disinfectants and kills more than even alcohol in studies.
Anyone ever get darkening on the corners of their substrate? I got these grey/purple looking corners to my substrate now. Not sure if it's mold or not but I just ripped the section off just in case. Should've taken pics, but too late now.

I think you mean chlorine dioxide, made from sodium chlorite. ("MMS" is a marketing term by sleazy pseudoscientists that encourage drinking it.)
But yeah, that's one of the good ones, but I don't recall how fast it acts. Some strong disinfectants are slow (like hydrogen peroxide being very strong but too slow for sanitizing). If it works, I'd keep using it. Though I like the way alcohol dries fast. I use ethanol-based sanitizer so I don't worry about inhaling large amounts.

my tam rate plummeted since i got the FFU. I try to do all my work now right up near the filter. the SAB was a fucking nightmare.
I left a plate open in the flow for about 12 hours and it's still pristine, tho maybe it dried out too much to show tams Quote:

That could be it, the h202 or PG leaving residues eve , or the high alc content... I heard 70% is best because of osmosis. To go along with this sanitation experiment I also testing sanitized steel, sanitized fingers and gloves, but also with 70%vs 91. I couldn't find 99 when I was at the store. I do have some everclear tho
70% disinfects better. i buy 99 and dilute it with distilled h2o cause it evaporaates slowwwer

I've also diluted >90% using water before when I couldn't find 70%
I care more about washing my hands at the beginning of the mush work than showering myself in iso.

I don't mean to sound like an asshole (or sound old school) but if you cant get a SAB to work I honestly dont recommend an FFU or hood because it will be used as a crutch for proper technique. even in the shittiest conditions good technique can give you good results. At the same time people that happen to employ good techniques in a shitty environment and take it for granted thinking its easy and neglect what needs to actually be done in that environment in order to achieve the right results will not get consistently good results which is the ultimate goal .

nah dead, that may very well be legitimate, but my tam rate plummeted since i got the FFU. I try to do all my work now right up near the filter. the SAB was a fucking nightmare.
Different folks may have different issues. Me, I deal with lymphomas cause 9/11, past monster-chemo and ongoing daily oral chemo. And I ain't that young...saw Hendrix and them. So I deal with some tremors, at times more than others, and that impacts work in the cramped environment of [at least my] SAB. I am fucking glad to be rid of it. i note that good sterile technique is quite different from the SAB to the FFU. I had a good run with the SAB but it became ever more physicl impactful
just sayin

dying to get out of my SAB and into the flow... soon soon I hope
but yes I agree with Ted also
think I saw someone on here say once "doesn't matter the cost of the filter, it won't filter your bad technique"
sums it up pretty good I reckon
the sheer brilliance of the SAB itself is a marvel to behold though in a sense... amazing they work as well as they do for such a simple contraption

Just started working under a hood. I have some plates I've been working in a SAB for almost a year that just won't stop triching out.
Could I run the hood for a few hours then shut the flow and work in open air to do a transfer? Or best just to keep going in the SAB?

I’ve done a couple moldy plates at the end of a SAB session where I turn it off and do the transfer real quick and it’s been ok.

Not best practice but it can be done and I’ve also done it myself successfully, luck will probably be a factor in how it turns out. I mean if you’re gonna be doing it in SAB anyway when all your shit is away I don’t see why not…how mouldy are we talking here anyway?

I think you meant FFU but yeah I've done the same.
Open air transfer at the end of a FFU session with no issues several times.
