Another good method if you have extra shoeboxes not in use is to put one on top of the sub and fill the empty one with water. Holds down the sub evenly and makes draining out the dunk water really easy using the empty shoebox to hold it down while draining the water off.

Finally got some pins on those shoeboxes I spawned 2 weeks ago!
I notice both have a corner with a different texture than the rest of the surface, anything I should be worried about? Is it drying out? Contaminated?

Looks like itโs probably an airflow thing.
Pins look healthy should be a good tub.

Update: first shoebox (MS B+) progress from a week ago, all happened in a handful of days. Thanks everyone for your help

My first ever grow.
Would love to thank Mushboy and all contributors of this post. This has been my growing Bible. Really happy with this ODPE grow. Not sure why I chose PE for my first grow. I have 10 boxes of PE and 2 of B+.
My major concerns have been:
White fuzz on the caps/dark pointy caps. what is this? And how do you prevent it?
Fuzzy feet has been rampant, I know I need more FAE. I assumed flipping the top of the box would be sufficient. Obviously I was wrong.
Side pins kicked my butt, especially with my B , on the boxes without a liner. Assuming I have to pack it tighter on the edges. The microclimate around the edges are to perfect ��
Also looks like I had a mushy with a case of Vert.
luckily for me, NATURE has been able to overcome my shortcomings!

Those are great for a first grow.
Idk what exactly odpe is genetically but it looks close enough to PE that it should be potent. Thereโs a couple in there that make me thing it might be a PE/PEu cross.
Definitely a little more air and you should be set. Maybe a little more water in the coir to keep the surface right.

The pointy caps/fuzz look like aborts.
I would try adding a little more water when you prep the coir. Misting is mostly just to help keep the surface beaded with water, but thereโs a sweet spot with coir hydration where itโll make itโs own beads as it colonizes.

Sounds good.
Should I just harvest the aborts?
Also, is there a way to add moisture to the current sub or just wait to harvest and soak sub then?

Here are some of my shoeboxes. Thanks bod for your cultivation easy as fuck series it was very helpful. I make these with four colonized half pint PF cakes, shredded with cheese grater into equal amount of coir. Fruit with plastic grocery bag.

Does anyone modify their shoeboxes or have to fan to get proper FAE? I get bad fuzzy feet with the top on or the top flipped?

As long as the mushrooms grow normally donโt worry about it. I see fuzz more often than not.
Itโs pretty hard to not get enough air in a shoebox too.

I see fuzz pretty often too. I like when it doesn't fluff up into fuzz and just forms a thin layer of white myc about an inch up the stipe. Like it's wearing a white felt coat.
