Michael Badnarik chosen as LP presidential nominee
    #2747635 - 05/30/04 07:00 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

ATLANTA -- Michael Badnarik said "there's no reason'' he can't take President Bush's place in the White House.

The Texan bases his optimism on winning the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination Sunday in Atlanta.

Badnarik is a 49-year-old computer programmer from Austin who also teaches a course in constitutional law.

He defeated former Hollywood movie producer Aaron Russo on the convention's third ballot, after former radio talk show host Gary Nolan, who was eliminated on the second ballot, endorsed Badnarik.

The Libertarian Party was formed in 1971 and stresses individual rights over the power of government.

It claims nearly 600 elected officials across the country -- almost all of them in city or local government.

More than 800 delegates attended the convention in Atlanta.

Caught the entire six+ hour nomination process on C-SPAN today. Was quite a treat to see three candidates as excellent as Badnarik, Russo, and Nolan were. It was extremely close in the first and second balots. After Nolan was eliminated for garnering the fewest votes in the second, he was allowed to make a short speech in which he asked his delegates to support Badnarik. This turned the tides completely and allowed Michael to get the 405 majority neccesary for nomination on the third ballot. It was great to see the democratic process in action at the Libertarian convention as opposed to the coronations that occur at the Republican and Democrat conventions. Mike will be on Washington Journal tommorow morning, sometime between 7am and 9am EST.
