Has anybody ever paid attention to agar nutrition affecting jump off speed? A few weeks ago I knocked up a bunch of jars that just sat around, with one eventually jumping off after two weeks and then growing normally. I figured it was because I had been keeping my plates in a room that never got below 90 and regularly went above 110.
So I took wedges and grew them all out at normal temps. I knocked up a new batch three days ago and nothing. They look like it was three minutes ago. The only thing I can think of is I’ve been using slightly harder and more nutritious plates lately.
If the strain has never been on grain it has to first turn on enzymes to use it as food, and that can take a while, possibly a really long while, depending on the strain.
Proof is if you go from grain to agar and then back again there's no lag at all. Some strains may like agar better, that's why I sometimes think germinating on grain is a better bet even if less controlled. See https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26369976 for an experiment with that there...

Interesting.
Yet another thing for the list of experiments
It’s just so weird because I’ve run a ton of cultures and never seen it before. I thought it was a problem with the grain at first but then the one eventually went.
It can only be the higher nute plates or heat to affect 8 different cultures like that. Using grain water in agar always seemed to be logical too.

does enigma only pop up from albino tubs? i remember the guy semi recently that was growing a RW tub and then an enigma popped up. my maz shoeboxes that had all these offwhite/yellowish boogers are fruiting like crazy off the sides and bottoms, but the top now seems like those boogers grew a bit and theres some wavy/fin looking things that are bruising blue. ill snap a pic in a day or two when i harvest the rest of the fruits cause right now the sub is standing on its side because the bottom/side fruits so its hard to take a good pic.

Enigma is a specific clone only culture, but that type of mutation can show up in anything. I had one in an ESS tub recently.

Shroomery noob question.
First off thank you big much, this forum saved me from buying a kit from a place in the middle of America. Thank goodness I googled "_____ grow kit review" and found this site. I've spent hours in here reading over the past week or so.
I'm on my way with cube cakes and I want to create a log of my first grow but I don't have permission to post in the grow log forum so perhaps that's not the right place for it? Should I use my journal instead?
Thanks!

I’m wondering what everyone’s cleaning procedures are. In general and when you have jars contaminate. I’ve just been using dish soap to clean everything and when I have contamination issues I soak in a tub of water with some bleach first. I’m just wondering if there’s anything special that I should be doing. Also, do you PC your agar tools often? I did a couple times but then I’m flame sterilizing before I use anyways so I’m not sure there’s any point.

Could someone with experience in tents and humidifiers check my thread out please?

I'm getting a small tent and want to know if the mist maker 3 (1200ml per hour) is too much for my size tent.

If you get a moldy jar you can fill a bucket with soapy water and open the jar under water so the spore cloud doesn’t blow all over.
If it’s really bad you can pc the jar to kill the mold first. Honestly I just throw bad jars out now. It’s so gross cleaning them I just can’t do it to save a 70 cent jar even though I feel bad tossing it.
If you’re flame sterilizing you don’t need to pc them. I wipe down my scalpel handle with iso and then flame the entire blade really well before I start, then I just flame the blade above where it snaps on between transfers.

Wouldn't opening the jar under water cause the water to rush in and a spore explosion in your face?

I clean grain jar in the dishwasher, works normally. Usually sit outside on a chair scooping out the grains beforehand. Agar jars dont even get dishwashed, just scooped out n refill, no problem.

I've only ever used gas burners for large pots or drum pasteurizing but I don't have my burner at the moment and have this solid plate stove. You reckon a 20L canner would be ok on this stove?

If it can get it up to pressure, it can hold it.
Test today my friend, ive had oven plates so weak it took 1h to get a 6L pc up to steam
With oven guards turning it off every 10 minutes or so
Pure hell

I'm more concerned about weight to be honest, I'm renting where I stay now so I don't want to go destroying their stove but more importantly I could hurt my pc

I’ve done the opening under water thing but the only problem is then I have a bucket filled with moldy grain water. I’m in an apartment so I cant just chuck it outside or something. I have to pour it through a strainer into my bath tub. So now i have more equipment that’s come into contact with mold and it’s just more trouble than it’s worth. The best/easiest method I came up with is bringing everything into my bathroom. Closing the door and turning on the exhaust fan. I open the jars in my garbage can with the lid on (it’s a flip lid that closes as soon as I take my hands out). The jars go directly into a tub with bleach water after they’re emptied in the garbage. I spray Clorox into the garbage can after each one to take care of any airborne spores. That was the best method I could come up with without making a huge mess and having moldy material get all over the place and touch a bunch of stuff. I’m new to this so I’m open to any suggestions if there’s something to make it easier or cleaner.
