Official European Psilocybe serbica thread - season 2021 7
#27474406 - 09/19/21 09:42 PM (1 year, 4 months ago) |

Serbies have started ! Earlier than ever perhaps. Was surprised to see them today. Found them in a completely unknown location following my serbica intuition. They are very small, and haul was weak, but they will get fatter with time. They peak in fatness during the winter.
I didn't want to narrow more than Europe for this year, since not many people hunt this species, but it will also be good to see level of variation in P.serbica throughout the Europe. Hopefully this thread will be genesis for future separation to many European regions and countries.
Also, I will provide some guidance for begginer hunters interested in this species. All questions concerning P.serbica are more than welcomed, and I would be more than happy to see your finds posted here.
Today's finds (19.09.2021):

Habitat (see picture): Mostly Abies alba forest mixed with Pinus sp, and occasional hardwood here and there. Mushrooms were growing from a wet decomposed wood.

Day/night temperatures: 23°C/9°C Altitude: 1000m ___________________________________ NOOBS BE ADVISED:
1. Pine, fir and beech forests, are the absolute key on finding this species. Please avoid all the other kinds of woodland. Rubus spp are the best plant indicators, and Macrolepiota procera is the absolute best mushroom indicator species for serbies. If parasol is near, you are getting closer.
2. Be careful when picking this species. It grows alongside another woodlover - deadly poisonous Galerina marginata. Please study the following pictures:

Psilocybe serbica is on the left !
3. Psilocybe serbica does not bruise instantly to deliberate damage or picking (but very often mushrooms exhibit blue staining while unpicked). It takes at least about 10 minutes for bruising to show. This almost tricked me first time I ever found it, almost threw it away due to the lack of bruising. Bruising intensifies after 15 minutes:

Is it worth looking at lower attitude 200-300 meters above sea or no chance? Do this really need high attitude to appear?

I am not aware of any case this species was found at alt lower than 500m. I believe it is possible, but not at this time of year, perhaps later in season. This species really prefers relatively high mountains with old growth forests. I would be happy to see it being found as low as that.
That said, you could use temperatures as an indicator, when day drops under 20, and night under 10, lots of rain falls, you might get lucky regardless of the altitude - if you are in the right habitat. Don't be discouraged in advance, there is only one way to know for sure, which is to go out there.

No serbies at last year's locations, but no worries for me, I found yet another patch. They are slowly getting fatter.
In a pine forest, growing from wood debris, partially hidden by retarded mambo jumbo Rubus and Dryopteridaceae plants, so look closely !

Not really, they are not genetically close to azzies. Closest serbica relative is Ps.aztecorum.
Also, they don't look like azzies, and habitat is much different.
It is very variable species, described under fifty names already: Psilocybe arcana, Psilocybe moravica, Psilocybe moravica var sterberkiana, Psilocybe bohemica, Psilocybe bohemica var moravica... There is also slight difference in spore size, so some people still make a distinction, but dna analysis says they are conspecific.
Serbica thrives in Central and Southern Europe, but it is also been found as south as Morocco.

So then the place I were last week is a good candidate then: ~800-1000m, beech forest, lot of rubus and the place was littered with macrolepiota. I will definitely give it a try this week again, we got a rain too a day or two ago. Both Serbica and Semilanceata are always been so specially ranked mushrooms in my mind, maybe cause they are truly wild and mysterious. It would be soo great if I ever be able to find them in the wild

Weirdest thing ever just happened. I found serbica at 228m altitude, in mixed hornbeam/oak forest. Finding them at this low alt is something it's unheard of. And it was unusually wavy capped. I think now I will eat all the shit i spouted about serbica not occuring in non beech deciduous and i deeply apologize for spreading miss-information. There was not a single beech wood, at least I didn't observe it. One thing however I'm not sure. I might accidentally spreaded spores here since this find is 3 km from my house and i visit this forest often. Also last year i carried water bottle with serbica spores and splashed them wherever i thought it's cool. That said, I absolutely do not recall whether I scattered spores to this exact forest, I lean towards that I didn't.

These are so cool, always happy to see the thread pop up.
Feels like pellies and azzies had an illicit affair, but still unique.
Some day I'm going to make a planter with these in it and set it out in the yard in Oregon.

It is time to close the season for this year...Winter is coming and serbicas are getting fat from the snow and rain. But they are also getting more rare with each passing day and soon will disappear completely. I have found only two today at 680m altitude, and won't search for them anymore, so for me the season is over. They could be found for maybe a week or two more, depending on the weather.
2. December, my last serbica foray of 2021:

Not many people participated besides me, but thanks to all who did, and thanks for all the nice comments and support from the community. Hopefully next season thread will be more popular and many people will be inspired to go hunt serbicas and post their finds.

Hey, I've been participating, but just not actually finding any!
We just got some rain here after 2-3 weeks of nothing, so I'll be hunting again through the weekend. Who knows? Maybe some will turn up...
