Thujone

Anyone else play around with making absynthe?
1. About how much thujone is in 1oz of wet and dry wormwood (Artemesia absinthium)? 2. Is it better to dry wormwood first? 3. How much wormwood, wet or dry, per oz of liquid? 4. How long does it take for thujone to tincture into the liquid? 5. Is Thujone a MAO inhibitor?
Thanks, tk

Here's a recipe for Spanish Absenta (absinthe) that was considered delicious by just about anyone I let drink of it:
------------------------------------------------------------------
ABSENTA VERDE - a Spanish verte absinthe approx. 55% alcohol
required:
12 grams star anise 8 grams green anise (aniseed) 6 grams fennel 4 grams wormwood herb 2 grams angelica root 1 grams coriander
and also:
3 grams lemon balm (melissa) 2 grams hyssop
and also:
1.5 liters 40% alcohol (flavorless vodka)
preparation:
1..Grind the 6 maceration herbs into a powder 2..Put the herbal powder in the 1.5 liter 40% alcohol and shake well 3..Let this stand in the dark for 12-24 hours (overnight) 4..Pour the alcohol with the wet herbs into your still 5..Distill off one liter of condensate (warning: flammable) 6..Reduce the melissa + hyssop to a powder 7..Put the herbal powder into the liter of distillate and shake well 8..Let this stand in the dark for 12-24 hours (overnight) 9..Pour the Absenta through a coffee filter-paper to filter it 10.Store your liter of Absenta Verde at least two months to ripen

Wow this was really helpful.
I'm wondering if I can steam-distill the thujone out of the wormwood as an essential oil.

before i had a still i also made absinthe using essential oils (which you can buy easy enough, though make sure any wormwood essence you buy still has the thujone as a lot remove it). tbh the whole journey of making it from scratch is worth doing , there are many chemicals involved and thujone is just one of them - these days i add more calaumus root than that recipe indicates and re colour using mint+lemon balm.
*re distilling the macerated herbs is a must -you cannot skip this step ( thujone is extremely bitter and just plain nasty)

Hey thanks for responding.
Yeah I tried a tincture with dried wormwood (without distilling), and it was effing HORRIBLE. I basically made bitters.
Do you know if there's any difference between ethanol distilling of wormwood, and steam distilling to leave the nasty behind and grab the essential oils (including thujone), adding them to the final product?
I believe that steam distilling also takes thujone, correct? Do anise and fennel benefit from ethanol distillation, or is steam distillation equally as good?

sorry i know nothing about steam distillation , that said absinthe is about the flavours and oils from all the herbs - not just wormwood (which plays a small part). imo it would be pointless as you would need to steam distill each herb (and there are a few) and keep the oils separate before you re mixed them in the alchohol at the proportions needed. the herbs produce a lot of oils and this is why the alchohol content of absinthe is so high (to keep them in suspension ) - you can easily tell if your alchohol content to too low as the oils will drop out and louche the liquid to a milky colour (you do this on purpose when preparing the drink)
... i cant think of any use for thujone on its own tbh - the main component that would have any 'extra' effects would be the calamus root -though as i said before its a combination of all the herbs that makes the drink.

Great info, thanks again.
Thujone has had a lot of publicity, and so it _MUST_ be there because peeps think they'll _TRIP_BALLZ_ on it.
Here on Teh Shroomzery we all know better... there's much easier and superior ways to trip balls.
