Re coir pasturisation

Had poor luck the last time round with contamination in tubs. Never had a contam with verm and horse poo.
Is is ok to pasturise coir in the same fashion as verm and poo?
Normally I I pasturise via pillow case in a pot at 170f for 2 hours.
For familiarity sake until I go back to verm and poo will this work substituted with coir?

you can pasteurize it like that but almost none of us do. we simply put 650g coir into 4 qts hot water and done. You can add 2 qts of vermiculite also, but a lot of people don't even do that now.

What brand of coir are you using?
You’re absolutely sure it wasn’t just a bad round of spawn that’s making you think it was the coir? Coir is very contam resistant. I personally still use boiling water in my bucket tek. Maybe try a different brand of coir (I like coco bliss but I hear canna coir is even better albeit, more expensive). I’ve found some pretty weird shit in really cheap coir.. sea shells, large chunks of salt, a clump of hair lol

I don't even use boiling water. Mildly hot tap water in first then cold straight away to bring it to temp where I can mix my spawn in. No contams in tubs ever. Could probably just use straight cold water tbh.

You got your replies.
I personally boil water to rolling boil, dump coir, turn off the stove. Wring it after an hour. And cool it down further. Wring it as you go to get field capacity and spawn away.

Contam doesn't come from coir, it comes from your spawn. You don't need to pasteurize coir, I just use hose water to hydrate it, never been a problem I'm living proof 👍 I have also let my coir sit for months after making it and it always looks as good as the day it was made. Coir doesn't contam because it is a nutrition-less medium, spores can't germinate on it because there is no source of food. It's just a source of water retention.

Perfect way of putting it. I’ll be making up months worth of coir next week. Much easier than tub by tub.

Exactly! Cuts your work load down by having it pre made on a different day. I have heard stories of some terrible coir brands though I would stay away from stuff that has junk in it

Depends to be honest, I have recently posted about my experience with raw , field capacity coir growing cobweb and trich. I now pasteurize my coir prior to any kind of work.

Most likely one of the poorer brands that has shite in it. Can’t class or treat it as just coir if it’s coir + shite.

It's a pretty well known brand used in all the hydro shops and is a very good looking grade of coir. I had succes previously with other brands, pretty simple exercise of moving back and testing with a small lunch box of coir again to verify the cleanliness of the brand previously used.

Fair enough mate, if you had success with other brands though doesn’t that lead you to believe it’s this brand?

How long did it take to grow the cobweb and trich? I've never had it happen with the stuff I've used but I've also never let it sit for more than 60 days. I've heard stories of bad coir brands contaminating

Around 10 days it started forming a few different colonies. I guess the experience just made me nervous because it took me ages to figure out where the problem came from until I left some coir to sit.

Brand is best grow coir. Bit off putting, I'd never had a contam with any tubs until then.
Could have been a fluke and I missed a contamed jar before cloning. Everything looked and smelled healthy.
Any point in adding gypsum to coir?

Stick to pasteurizing if it works for you, coir and hpoo can be pasteurized in the same way.
