9 month old oats and plates
    #27469801 - 09/15/21 07:32 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I've got about 15-20 pounds of oats that have been hanging around for about the last 9 months or so. They've just been sitting in the original paper sack with the top open, in my garage with no temperature or humidity control.

Are these worth using or should I just feed my neighbors chickens and spend the $10 on a new bag of feed?

I also just remembered I have about 25 plates of agar that I poured about 6 months ago. Individually wrapped with saran wrap and stored at room temp. They do not have any contams on them and I can still see some very small beads of condensation. Would these still be good for germination or transfers? I'd hate to waste these.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Good enough for me! I'll streak some plates this weekend and see what happens. Thanks again

Oats are the only thing I use now.

How do you prepare them?
I dump them raw, no rinse, in rolling boiling water and cook for 15-17minutes, drain and steam evaporate for a couple of minutes.

Sooo easy AF.

I just used a stack of plates I initially skipped over because they had water stains on them and I wasn’t sure what the spots were. Fast forward 2 months and no contamination just what looked like hard water stains from condensation that dried on the surface. Did some transfers to them for fun and despite being a little more firm they are working just fine

That's exactly how I prep oats. I dump them into two big colanders I have, drain, put the colanders on a baking sheet, point a fan at them and toss them every few minutes. Within 15 minutes the exterior is completely dry and ready for the PC. I'd like to try another grain but I can usually get 50# sacks for $8 5 minutes from my house so I can't justify switching.

I just unwrapped and poked a plate to feel it. Unfortunately I think they're a bit too dry, especially for germination so I'll end up pouring a sleeve this weekend.

I haven't been able to do any cult work to speak of since March and I finally have a little time coming up so I'd rather start fresh than waste any spores (or time).
