Wrong shaped jars. Help?
    #27469597 - 09/15/21 04:50 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hello everyone! This is my first post. I was seeking some guidance. So I made the rookie mistake of using the wrong shaped jars… they are not wide mouthed but have that kind of shoulder to them. I have 4 jars that are almost fully colonized. One of my jars colonized a fair bit quicker and I decided to attempt to birth a cake that was not pinning but had been fully white on the outside for about a week.

Long story short the cake would not come out of the jar for obvious reasons. Tried even breaking the jar and that didn’t work. To cut to the chase I basically soaked the cake in the jar in the fridge covering it with tin foil. Then I basically drained the water out as best I could and placed it in my fruiting chamber which has filters. I have a layer of perlite on the bottom of the chamber.

My questions are, do you think that anything will grow from this cake? Second question is how should I proceed with my three other jars that are doing fine and show no signs of contam? I have seen in a book that mushrooms can be grown straight out of a jar but I haven’t been able to find any instructions on this. Does one just forgo the soaking process?

Others have suggested that I just use a sterile form to break the cake apart. Would I then just spread it apart onto tin foil in the chamber?

easy

spawn them to bulk. thats what i do with all my pf cakes

buy some coconut coir
soak it in water
drain and squeeze until it stops dripping
cut/scoop cakes out of jars
dice them with a knife or crumble by hand
mix coir with crumbles 50/50
load into whatever container makes sense
probably a bowl or tupperware
put into fruiting chamber
wait

i would recommend doing all your cakes together like this. make one big substrate. you can put the first one in the fridge to stall it

There was some tek I found here on how to break the jar.  Flip it upside down so the cake slides towards the lid side and away from the glass.  and hit the bottom corner of the glass with a hammer/chissel.  I did that and the cake came out unharmed.

there is zero reason to break the jar. spawning pf cakes to bulk will get you a bigger yield and require less babysitting, both thanks to the highly absorbent coir. honestly idk why people fruit cakes individually

I would fruit cakes invitro with a ziplock bag over it only if they are highly bacterial and too sketchy to spawn to bulk, otherwise there is no reason to not spawn them to bulk.
