Growing mushrooms on used cat litter
    #27468460 - 09/14/21 07:50 PM (11 days, 7 hours ago)

I'm new to this world, but my wife and I were always interested in trying to grow mushrooms in our home. We moved a couple of months ago and now have the space to start growing, so we reading and learning into this world.

I read that you can use as soil sawdust, and even cat litter. We have a couple of cats that use wood chips, similar to the ones used in fireplaces, as litter. When I clean the litter boxes there's a lot of sawdust remaining, which I hadn't been able to find a use for it. Is it possible to use it for growing mushrooms? Is it safe? Does anyone know someone who has tried something similar?

Thanks in advance

Sawdust is cheap. Why would you want to play in cat pee and poo

Would you grow vegetables with cat litter? How would you feel about tomatoes grown in it? This is basically equivalent.

Cat droppings contain pathogens and cannot be used without extensive composting. But why bother doing so when cow and horse compost is cheap and readily available?

Well, I'm just trying to recycle everything and I hadn't been able to find a use for that, thanks for your answers

I understand the sentiment. Do you compost? Anything that isn't meat can be composted indoors. If you ever throw out any vegetables you could use those for the garden instead. If you make coffee, you can compost all those grounds.

Cat litter is a biowaste and is one of the few things you can't do anything with, but most people throw lots and lots of compostable stuff in the garbage. My guess is there's plenty of stuff currently in your trash that could be composted. And with composting eventually it turns into wonderful soil. I've never found any soil in bags that is as good as proper homemade compost.

I used to live with someone that had a cat. I took the litter, soaked in lime water, then dumped it in an ornamental section of the garden and inoculated with king stropharia. Plenty of shrooms (I didn't eat), and turned into worm filled soil pretty quickly. Better than binning.

I don't see why not, if you don't mind messing around with it.  People grow mushrooms on shit all the time and urine is pretty much just a nitrogen source.  Ugh, but the smell...

Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them?  Try this double extraction method.
