Any experts wanna take a stab at identifying what this orange stuff is?

Upon a search I found that orange is sometimes metabolites, but I didn't see photos of what looked like mycelium dyed orange.
Any ideas? Thanks

How about this - would it be bad to attempt to spawn this to its own shoebox? I've included a better pic.

Yes lol. Do not spawn that. You should have thrown it out long ago.

It's pretty, but I wouldn't spawn it unless you're serious about adopting it.

Does anyone have a sense if this is a mold, bacteria, or metabolites? It looks like the mycelium itself is producing the orange, but what do I know. About not spawning it - is it health risks, contaminating my house if it's mold, or you just see it as a waste of time? Thanks.

If it aint white, it aint right.....mycelium of course. I had a jar do that once. Its not a good sign. Throw that out, and start over.

Do you want to know what it is just out of curiosity? I see what looks some colored wetness, and even the white mycelium isn't looking too hot, so I'm betting besides the obvious mold there's some bacteria in there. As for what type of mold it is, I have no clue.
Regarding your last question, spawning that jar would be a health risk to some extent. Mold spores are hazardous to breathe in large quantities, like any fine particulate. Over time it produces a disease known as pneumoconiosis. Spawning a moldy jar is a great opportunity to get billions of spores into the air. It is also a waste of time. Molds are much more aggressive colonizers than mushrooms, so they won't give any chance to take hold of the substrate, let alone produce anything.

It might be Neurospora crassa, which I believe for the most part is pretty benign. Its a bread mold. Mold isn't as scary as many would have you believe.
