I don’t know where this post should go because it is more than just about politics.
Does it feel to anyone else that people from every walk of life are being divided? To me it feels like a us against them mentality.
The news and social media hasn’t helped at all and seem to be fueling the hate. Us pointing fingers & blaming each other isn’t helping to find solutions.

I subscribe more to the idea that the 1960-2010 period was one of exceptional unity, not that we are experiencing exceptional division.

I did make a note of it a few days ago how wild it felt how divided people are right now, mostly around covid vaccines. It seems like this issue is dividing the globe right down the middle. I imagine that global warming issues coming soon will only increase this.

But I think by recognizing these divides, and trying to find a balance is where we can find the best understanding of our situations as well as pull ourselves back together.

QM33, I like what you are saying about recognizing the divides. I was thinking it was hate but it’s fear that causes people react in the way that we all have. It’s easy to get caught up with what’s in the headlines

When I went to HS back during the staring at the wall days about 100 white kids and 100 Mexicans would line up on the football field and threaten to have a gang fight . They did this 2 to three times a year but always let me down . They hated each other , everyone watching didn't really care for any of them either , we just wanted to see them hurt each other . There were like 10 black kids in my school , I don't think they liked anyone , and I'm not sure if anyone liked them , the assholes lined up on the field certainly didn't . I think hate is just in our nature , there sure was allot of it before social media and 24 hr news . I didn't know anyone who watched the news back then , I didn't watch tv at all really .

I think a lot of it depends on being raised that way or other circumstances Hopefully the kids of this world will be able to look at things in a different light.
I think people on both sides have valid concerns for the virus. Maybe the studies that are being done on plant based treatments will be a game changer or compliment what is already out there

More like 1940-1950
We ought to make a distinction, Are we divided? Yes, but less so than what we might think we looking at media. We mostly live the same way, without hugely conflicting interests* and Are we being divided, purposely? Yes. In a way, that's just politics... but it gets sickly when the (all too common) strategy of "Your problems are all the fault of the opposition" is used.
I think the division is more clear at this moment, because the issues of the moment are more direct and immediate. Either the view is: This is life and death at risk, or, this is my core freedoms at risk; right now, ongoing. Folks don't get this riled up over a change in the tax code.

That's sort of what I meant when I specified 1960-2010. Post WWII, the US was the only industrialized nation in the world that hadn't been bombed back to the stone age. This meant a massive economic boom for everyone, which led to a massive rise in unity. There were issues, sure, but none that were direct and immediate (apart from civil rights, but that was only direct and immediate to a small subset of the population). I'd say the downward trajectory started in 1980, accelerated in 1994, and by 2010, the majority of the US population was no longer riding that economic boom. By 2008, the (financial) issues of the moment caught up to >50% of the population.
People are becoming generally uncomfortable, and unhappy. This breeds division because suddenly "they" can't be trusted anymore. Whoever your guy says they are.
This will, of course, make things worse.
Back in 1945, the US won the lottery. And just like any family that wins the lottery, we started using it. Making sound investments and such. But, we also got a fancy car. And a nicer house. And a second fancy car.
Suddenly, all the money is gone. We're in the "blame everybody else" part of the TLC episode about my hypothetical lottery-winning reality TV family.

Lets add another factor into this complex system such as the anonymity of the internet. Most people wouldn't even dare say what they say online to others if they were face to face.
A shit ton of virtual larping, SJW activity with little to no consequence or effort to get off their chairs and phones.
What's been going on is a dictators wet dream of fear, dopamine bursts, propaganda and ultimately; control by building false realities in the comforts of our own homes/phones by those who play along.
It is like virtually burrying heads in the sand at this point of our technological evolution. It is one thing to read about something then mentally masturbate on it and another to experience it with all our senses.

It is us against them.

I don't think there is a whole lot of "the rest of us". The average person has some issues where they would rather not fight, but you can usually find other issues where they will be divisive.
I think it's technology and media culture. When I was growing up everybody got the same news from one of three channels, plus one local channel that was an affiliate of one of those. I don't know if Walter Cronkite was telling us the truth, but there weren't too many people doubting it then.
