mountaineering footwear
    #27461496 - 09/09/21 09:06 AM (2 years, 4 months ago)

I've been catching the mountain bug. Interested in summiting mountains in the PNW, cascade range.  I was looking into crampons and boots.  I think I like the Black diamond sabertooth crampons.  Currently have a pair of rocky blizzard stalker mountain Boots. I use them for the freezer cargo at work.  I have a double insole and must admit, they seem a bit large unless I double sock it.  They do keep my feet warm. What I was wondering if any has a suggestion on a better boot.  Is it worth spending extra money on something that has crampons welts or us it just fine using boots without welts.  Looking maybe to upgrade from the Rocky Blizzards though i prefer not to pay a crazy amount.

After some thought and research, I decided it's probably best to buy a boot with crampon welts for best results in mountain climbing.  I really liked the scarpa mont blanc ! In fact, I've been considering several scarpa models. However, I'm having difficulty finding the right size and these boots tend to get pretty pricey.  I think I'm going to go with the La sportiva Nepals. Has great reviews and I think it will be a great addition to my backpack and work nicely with the crampons I want. $400 is alot to spend, but Fuck it. I want some good gear for climbing

We used to use those hard shell mountain boots for snowboarding back before the sport became mainstream and hardshell boots specific to snowboarding came out. They are very rigid in my memory and not easy to walk in. I always understood they were only used in technical rock, glacier and ice climbing situations.

Are you planning on doing mostly winter stuff or will you be hiking as well?

I have a stiff pair of salmon boots with gortex lining and vibram hard shank soles that have been excellent hikers for me for the last 20 years. I think I dropped a $125 on them while on sale.

Im mostly iterested in summiting mountains, bit I think I'm going to be caught by the winter and stuck doing winter activities as well. I've been wanting to do something extreme. I think I'm fairly fit and could tackle a mountain if I try. Already got the backpack and most basic gear. A good pair of mountain Boots couldn't hurt

In the US most mountains aren't that big and have decent trails to the top. the PNW is different, but I hike in VivoBarefoot shoes. When I was doing wildlands I had Kowas or however you spell it. But they're fireproof. The vivos are awesome

I'd be interested in whatever you learn Freddy. While I only do the occasional rock scramble/steep Appalachian hike I have had a vague interest in the experiences of mountaineering.

Also I noticed you're talking about the winter as if that's a separate condition but the taller mountains in that region can easily become "winter" any time of year so be aware of your microclimate before you climb and pack accordingly. Read and read and read and know what to expect man. Have backup and emergency plans. That way you know you can stay safe while you're having fun

I bought the sportiva Nepals.  I think I needs to buy the scarpa mont blanc as well since it's bothering me as to which one I rather have.  Ither way, I now have boots with crampon welts.  And do another item is added to my backpacking winter gear
